Mobile: Communication enables the Arab Spring, but tyrants ...

by mcampbell on May 23, 2012

Mobile communication tools act as an efficient, real time method of coordinating resistance to tyranny and mitigating the effects of government crackdowns. During the Libyan uprising, cell phones were used by rebels to organize and build solidarity. When Gaddafi shut down the cell network to cripple rebel communications, phones were still useful as cameras and recorders to document atrocities; however, the mobile network was critical to the rebels. This motivated Libyan expatriates and concerned foreigners to amass the considerable expertise and equipment necessary to hijack the system creating the ?Free Libyana? network, effectively restoring cell service into rebel hands.

During the Egyptian uprising in 2011, the government was so threatened by twitter that it shut down all ISPs. Google responded by offering a speak to tweet service over phone lines, where mobile phone users could call specific numbers, leave a message, and have it tweeted with #egypt.

Recognizing that mobile phones and social media are a threat to their power, the authoritarian Syrian regime has been attempting to track users through new technology. The U. S. government has responded through sanctions and asset freezes to individuals and companies that assist in this endeavour.
