Honors and Hires: AMPAS Members to Visit India's Film Community

This column in THR’s Behind the Screen blog—which runs on Fridays—covers members of the crafts and technology community who have been honored, hired, signed, or have otherwise made news.

Outreach:

As part of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ international outreach initiative, members of the Academy and staff will travel to India to take part in a next week’s celebration of 100 years of Indian cinema. The Academy will host presentations discussing digital motion picture preservation as well as developments in 3D technologies and digital projection.

Participants include Robert Neuman, Academy member and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ stereoscopic department head; Milton Shefter, member of the Academy Science and Technology Council, president of Miljoy Ent., and co-author of The Digital Dilemma, the Academy publication on preservation in the digital age; and Andy Maltz, director of the Academy Science and Technology Council and co-author of The Digital Dilemma. Also next week, the Academy will release a Marathi translation of The Digital Dilemma, jointly with Government of Maharashtra.

Promoted:

Karl Woolley has been promoted to creative technologist at Framestore. In the last year his work has included serving as technical supervisor on projects for Samsung’s Galaxy S4 launch and  BBC’s Comic Relief marathon.

Company News:

Post production sound company Todd-Soundelux is extending its lease term by 10 years for its Todd-AO West facility, located at Lantana in Santa Monica.  The lease includes new space adjacent to Todd-AO West, creating Soundelux West for the company’s sound editorial services. The new space will house talent including supervising sound editors Wylie Stateman and Peter Brown. Todd-AO West consists of five mixing stages, one ADR stage, one Foley stage and production offices and editorial rooms.

Testronic plans to unveil a single, redesigned location in early November, centralizing its U.S. operations. For the past seven years, Testronic has operated two facilities in Burbank. The company will now perform all of its testing and quality assurance services from their hub on North First Street. This facility also includes its file-based QC lab, which was upgraded in 2012 to provide UltraViolet interoperability testing.
