From PC Gaming To Zelda, Readers Submit Their Last-Gen Heroes

We've been having fun with the first week of our month-long Last-Gen Heroes series, in which Kotaku's staff has been looking back at the heroes and zeroes of the past console generation. Over at TAY, readers have been having a grand old time themselves. Here's some of what they've been talking about.

• Reader Zarnyx offers a very cool heroes post looking at Catherine, and the moral ambiguity of its protagonist Vincent. I liked Catherine too, Zarnyx.
• Aikage names Operation Rainfall as a hero, and more broadly argues that this past generation, we saw more gamers using the internet to organize and get empowered. He's also written a Zeroes post about motion control, which combines with Stephen's own post to make motion controlled gaming feel pretty bad about itself.
• Meanwhile Spacegar tackles the open-world revolution, discussing how much larger games have gotten over the last eight years.
• Jellybootsofdoom cites Alice: Madness Returns as a hero, saying it's a favorite game of the past generation.
• Josay!, meanwhile, has less kind words to say about DLC, naming it as a zero of the generation. Oh, Horse Armor. Who knew that your legacy would loom so large? I sense this may not be the last time DLC gets mentioned in this series...
• Astrokid248 has a zero/hero two-parter about "A tale of two Zeldas," breaking down how, in his opinion, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword occupied conflicting places in the lifespan of the Wii.
• General McFist, on the other hand, is still living the glory days of Mass Effect week, and has cited Mass Effect 3 as a zero. And not, he's quick to assure you, because of the ending.
• Invadingduck takes a shot at Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, a game that surely deserves a zero mention.
• And last but not least, DocSeuss throws caution to the wind and says that the PC was the best gaming platform of the last generation. I think that technically, the Wii Balance Board was the only "gaming platform" of the last generation, but I'll allow it, since I've had some thoughts of my own on this topic.

Good stuff so far, everyone. Quick note to TAYers for future posts: We've actually simplified the tags for this series, so just add both "Last-Gen Heroes" and "Last-Gen Zeroes" to each one, making the first tag match with whether the post is a zero or hero.
