China clamps down on North Korea with bank account closure

North Korea has come under new and unexpected pressure after China closed down the accounts of one of its few international banks, in an unprecedented expression of anger by Pyongyang?s only international supporter.

The Chinese Government declined to comment yesterday on the decision by the Bank of China to shut down the accounts held by North Korea?s Foreign Trade Bank (FTB), which is accused by the United States of being a conduit for the illicit trade in arms.

But the decision, which follows intensive lobbying by the US and South Korean governments, must have been made with high level approval
