(AP) ? The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed slumping center fielder Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list because of a right hamstring strain.

The Dodgers recalled catcher Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday to take Kemp's place on the roster.

Kemp was injured while running down a double in right-center by Mike Trout in Wednesday night's 4-3 loss to the Angels.

Kemp, a two-time All-Star, is batting .251 this season with two homers and 17 RBIs in 51 games, and has struck out 60 times in 191 at-bats following offseason shoulder surgery. In his last six games, he is 1 for 17 with 10 strikeouts.

Also, right-hander Stephen Fife was activated from the 15-day DL and optioned back to Albuquerque.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? In a potential direct challenge to the IOC and the Olympics, judo federation chief Marius Vizer plans to organize a global world championships every four years for all international sports federations.

Vizer was elected Friday as president of SportAccord, an umbrella body representing Olympic and non-Olympic sports federations. He defeated International Rugby Board chairman Bernard Lapasset of France 52-37 on the final day of the SportAccord convention in St. Petersburg.

The 56-year-old Vizer, a Romanian-born Hungarian, succeeds former cycling federation president Hein Verbruggen, who led the umbrella organization since 2004.

Vizer won on a platform of transforming SportAccord into a more powerful and lucrative body. The centerpiece of his project is to stage a ?United World Championships? every four years for Olympic and non-Olympic sports.

Vizer said he plans to organize the first event in 2017 and hopes all 91 member federations take part.

?The event will be organized in a country and events divided in different cities and different regions according to the infrastructure and different facilities necessary to every sport,? Vizer said. ?And, of course, in a period convenient for all international federations.?

The location of the first championships hasn?t been determined.

?I have the intention to establish offices worldwide and one of the countries which is part of this program can also be the first organizer,? Vizer said.

Vizer?s event would seem to pose a threat to the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Games. It could also conflict with existing world championships in high-profile sports such as track and field and swimming.

But Vizer, who has been president of the International Judo Federation since 2007, sought to downplay any rivalry with the IOC.

?I don?t think they have to be worried because it?s a different event with a different background, a different strategy,? he said. ?And of course we will do everything in partnership, agreement with all international sports organizations.?

Vizer said he has not discussed the plans with IOC President Jacques Rogge, who steps down in September after 12 years in the job.

Rogge told reporters that Vizer?s proposal goes against the position of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations, an umbrella body of the 28 sports in the games.

?ASOIF not later than 10 days ago came up with a declaration that the international program is already too congested and that there are too many events,? Rogge said. ?So this is something that has to be discussed not only between the IOC and SportAccord, but also within SportAccord itself.?

Rogge said he expects Vizer to meet with his successor after September?s election to discuss collaboration.

Vizer described his proposed championships as a ?commercial? venture to support national federations and dispelled the notion it would compete with the Olympics.

?The Olympics are something very different and special,? he said. ?They are the highest value which we have today in sport.?

Vizer said he has been in touch with sponsors and broadcasters about the project but declined to give details.

Microsoft aims to simplify with Windows 8.1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Microsoft is trying to fix what it got wrong with its radical makeover of Windows. It's making the operating system easier to navigate and enabling users to set up the software so it starts in a more familiar format designed for personal computers.

The revisions to Windows 8 will be released later this year. The free update, called Windows 8.1, represents Microsoft's concessions to long-time customers taken aback by the dramatic changes to an operating system that had become a staple in households and offices around the world during the past 20 years.

Microsoft Corp. announced its plans for Windows 8.1 earlier this month. The first details about what will be included in the update are being offered in a Thursday post on Microsoft's website at http://tinyurl.com/ogjfknb .

The Redmond, Wash., company gave The Associated Press a glimpse of Windows 8.1 Wednesday. It will provide a more extensive tour of Windows 8.1 and several new applications built into the upgrade at a conference for programmers in San Francisco, scheduled to begin June 26.

With the release of Windows 8 seven months ago, Microsoft introduced a startup screen displaying applications in a mosaic of interactive tiles instead of static icons.

The shift agitated many users who wanted the option to launch the operating system in a mode that resembled the old setup.

That choice will be provided in Windows 8.1, although Microsoft isn't bringing back the start menu. That menu that could be found in the left-hand corner of a computer screen by clicking a Windows logo on all other versions of the operating system since 1995. The lack of a start button ranks among the biggest gripes about Windows 8.

Microsoft is hoping to quiet the critics by allowing users start the operating system in a desktop design with an omnipresent Windows logo anchored in the lower left corner of the display screen. Users will also be able to ensure their favorite applications, including Word and Excel, appear in a horizontal task bar next to the Windows logo.

The switch should ease the "cognitive dissonance" caused by Windows 8, said Antoine Leblond, who helps oversee the operating system's program management.

Microsoft views Windows 8.1 as more than just a fix-it job. From its perspective, the tuneup underscores Microsoft's evolution into a more nimble company capable of moving quickly to respond to customer feedback while also rolling out more innovations for a myriad of Windows devices ? smartphones, tablets or PCs.

"Windows 8 has been out long enough for us to take stock of where things are going and what we need to do to move it forward," Leblond said.

It's crucial that Microsoft sets things right with Windows 8.1 because the outlook for the PC market keeps getting gloomier. IDC now expects PC shipments to fall by nearly 8 percent this year, worse than its previous forecast of a 1 percent dip. IDC also anticipates tablets will outsell laptop computers for the first time this year.

The growing popularity of tablets is now being driven largely by less expensive devices with 7- and 8-inch display screens. Microsoft built Windows 8 to primarily to run on tablets with 10-inch to 12-inch screens, an oversight that Leblond said the company is addressing by ensuring Windows 8.1 works well on smaller devices.

If Windows 8.1 doesn't stimulate more sales of PCs and tablets running on the operating system, it could escalate the pressure on Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. Although the company's revenue and earnings have steadily risen since Ballmer became CEO 13 years ago, Microsoft's stock performance has lagged other technology companies. Investors, though, appear to becoming more optimistic about Ballmer's strategy. Microsoft's stock has risen by about 25 percent since Windows 8's release last October, outpacing the 17 percent gain in the Standard & Poor's 500 index during the same period.

Microsoft's stock added 12 cents to $35 in Thursday's early afternoon trading.

Windows 8.1 will lean heavily on Microsoft's Bing search technology to simplify things.

As with Windows 8, the search bar can be found by pulling out a menu from the right side of a display screen. Rather than requiring a user to select a category, such as "files" or "apps," Windows 8.1 will make it possible to find just about anything available on the computer's hard drive or on the Web by just typing in a few words. For instance, a search for "Marilyn Monroe" might display biographical information about the late movie star pulled from the Web, a selection of photos and video and even songs she sang. Anyone who wants to hear a particular song stored on the computer or play a specific game such as "Angry Birds" will just need to type a title into the search box to gain access within seconds.

The redesigned search tool is meant to provide Windows 8.1 users with "pure power and instant entertainment," said Jensen Harris, Microsoft's director of user experience for the operating system.

Applications also can be found by sorting them by letter or category.

Other new features in Windows 8.1 include a built-in connection with Microsoft's online storage system, SkyDrive, to back up photos, music and program files; Internet Explorer 11, the next generation of Microsoft's Web browser; a lock-up screen that will display a slide show of a user's favorite pictures; resized interactive tiles; and a photo editor.

In an effort to avoid further confusion about the operating system, Windows 8.1 also will plant a tile clearly labeled "helps and tips" in the center of the startup screen.

Microsoft made the dramatic overhaul to Windows in an attempt to expand the operating system's franchise beyond personal computers that rely on keyboards and mice to smartphones and tablet computers controlled by a touch or swipe of the finger.

But Windows 8 has been widely panned as a disappointment, even though Microsoft says it has licensed more than 100 million copies so far.

One major research firm, International Data Corp., blamed the redesigned operating system for worsening a decline in PC sales by confusing prospective buyers. Meanwhile, Windows 8 hasn't proven it's compelling enough to put a major dent in the popularity of Apple Inc.'s pioneering iPad or other tablets running on Google Inc.'s Android software.

Microsoft, though, remains convinced that Windows 8 just needs a little fine tuning.

"We feel good about the basic bets that we have made," Leblond said.

The Two Faces of Michele Bachmann

U.S. Republican presidential candidate and Representative Michele Bachmann (R-MN) waves as she leaves Uncle Nancy's Coffeeshop during a campaign stop in Newton, Iowa December 23, 2011.

Michele Bachmann in Iowa in December 2011

Michele Bachmann's national career has been marked by wild swings between directness and misdirection. At times, the Minnesota representative is the embodiment of Tea Party clarity. At other times, she breaks new ground minting fact-free claims that make it hard to trust politicians. One of the fact-checkers that she has kept so busy joked that her departure from Congress should be declared?a national day of mourning.?

In announcing that she will not be seeking re-election, both of Bachmann's personalities were on display.?

As a political correspondent you find yourself on a lot of email lists without asking. This can be disorienting. Suddenly you are bombarded with accusations from one person about another person and you aren't familiar with either of them. It's like looking at the magazine covers at the grocery store checkout: Celebrities you've never heard of are reconciling from breakups you didn't know ever happened.

In this genre, Michele Bachmann's email blasts achieved a special art. They had a peculiar mix of chatty subject lines and desperate conspiracy peddling. "Can I mail you something?" read the subject line from one this weekend. "Listen to this!" reads another recent one, which then pleaded, "John Dickerson? Please?if you can?stop what you are doing right now and listen to my message immediately." Another fretted, "I need your advice ... I sent you the below email last week, and I'm concerned that I haven't heard back from you." She?s been very successful. According to the latest Federal Election Commission filings, she has more than $1.8 million in her campaign bank account.

Watch Michele Bachmann's greatest gaffes:

These solicitations aren't written by Bachmann, of course, but they matched her personality. They were written with the same directness that made her so appealing to Tea Party supporters.?One of the?laudable?attributes of the Tea Party movement is the B.S. filter of its members. Bachmann knew how to channel and tap into this quality. She was masterful at capturing the anger and resentment that wells up in people when they are told what kind of light bulb they must buy. In the 2012 campaign, she wasn't afraid to take on her Republican primary rivals, most?successfully calling out Newt Gingrich during one debate for repeatedly treating her like she didn?t really belong there.?

Juxtaposed with that image of Michele Bachmann is the fuzzy, fact-free side of her on display in her departure video. Shot in front of a bookshelf to the faint strains of elevator music, it runs 8 minutes but lacks discernible nourishment. ?In her emails, Bachmann's purpose is clear. Whether it's the perils of Obamacare or the Democratic machine's decision to target her, the message is unmistakable. Watching Wednesday?s video roll on, it's hard to know what you're watching. It feels at once like a eulogy, a campaign video for a future run for office, and an in-flight video. (I thought any minute she'd say, "Please be sure to comply with all lighted signs and placards.")

The video is for those same people she?s been bombing with regular, urgent fundraising appeals, but she never really explains her head-snapping decision to step down. She starts with a confusing numerology about her length of service in various political offices. Bachmann says she figured eight years was enough time in office.?Strange, because just Friday she sent out an email asking for money for her re-election.?Usually politicians break their pledge to be term-limited by deciding to stay in office; this may be the first case of late onset term limitation. She then insists that she's not leaving office because she?would lose re-election or because both the Federal Election Commission and the Office of Congressional Ethics are looking into the campaign finance activities of her presidential campaign. When you build a career on being direct, it doesn?t fit when you take the meandering route. At least she didn't claim she was leaving to spend more time with the family.

Bachmann will serve out the remainder of her term, but the ethics committee will probably not pursue her?it has no jurisdiction over former members. That doesn?t mean she won?t have plenty of material to keep her busy in the next year and a half. The?Tea Party is enjoying a rebirth. The IRS targeting of conservative groups ratifies its claims and worldview. The president's health care program is finally being implemented, which should offer regular opportunities for Bachmann to sound off. She?s been working to repeal the law harder than perhaps any other lawmaker. That means her career in Congress may be over, but the emails aren?t likely to stop.

Judge rejects legal challenges by accused Colorado theater gunman

By Keith Coffman

DENVER (Reuters) - A Colorado judge rejected challenges on Wednesday to the state's insanity defense statute and death penalty law by accused movie theater spree gunman James Holmes, resolving a key legal hurdle in the sensational case.

Lawyers for Holmes, accused of killing 12 moviegoers and wounding dozens more in a rampage last July, had argued that the state's insanity law was unconstitutional because it forces their client to cooperate with court-appointed psychiatrists.

They also contended that compelling the 25-year-old former neuroscience graduate student to reveal information to mental health experts that could be used against him at trial violates his constitutional right against self-incrimination. But Arapahoe County District Judge Carlos Samour disagreed.

"The provisions in the insanity statutes and the death penalty statute challenged by the defendant are constitutional," Samour wrote in a 51-page ruling, denying the defense's motions in their entirety.

The defense arguments were the latest legal wrangling surrounding last year's mass shooting in suburban Denver during a midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises."

Holmes, who is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder, is scheduled to stand trial in February. Prosecutors have said they will seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

In March, then-presiding Judge William Sylvester entered a standard not guilty plea for Holmes, but allowed his attorneys to change that to not guilty by reason of insanity.

Samour, who took over the case in April, has ruled that there was "good cause" for Holmes' lawyers to change the plea.

However, Samour said he could not rule on whether he would accept it until the challenges to the insanity defense and death penalty law were resolved, so he could properly advise Holmes of the ramifications of such a plea.

Public defenders for Holmes have said in court pleadings that the former University of Colorado graduate student has been hospitalized twice since his arrest, once for "potential self-inflicted injuries."

He has grown a shaggy beard and longer hair since he was arrested outside the movie theater minutes after the shooting spree. At his first court appearance days after the shooting, he looked dazed and sleepy with his hair dyed orange and red.

Neither prosecutors nor attorneys for Holmes have publicly commented on the case due to a court-imposed gag order.

Tim Cook thinks Google Glass lacks broad appeal, but wearables are 'incredibly interesting'

Today on stage at the D11 conference, Tim Cook indicated that Apple's interested in wearable tech, including Google Glass, even though he thinks it's "tough to see it [Glass] having a broad-range appeal." When asked about the current state of wearables, he mentioned that fitness devices like the Nike FuelBand (he owns one) will need to be able to do more than one thing to really catch on with the public.

Generally, he sees wearables as "an area that's ripe for exploration" and that "there will be tons of companies involved" in making such devices. He also mentioned that biometric sensors, in particular, are an area of growth that Apple will be watching with interest, and Cook sees the potential of the wearables space to accelerate the industry further into a Post-PC era as smartphones and tablets did. When asked about Apple's plans to make a wearable, Cook wouldn't comment on the existence (or non existence) of an iWatch. So, while this is far from a confirmation of a forthcoming Apple wearable, it seems certain that the crew in Cupertino is considering them carefully.

Update: Check out the video of Cook's comments embedded after the break.

Samsung official reportedly confirms Note III in the works, muses on potential camera upgrades

Given the success of the original Galaxy Note and its sequel, there's little doubt a third installment of the super-sized handset line is on Samsung's to-launch list. Korean site ETNews claims to have heard the first legitimate confirmation of the Note III's existence, however, citing a Samsung official as its source. The insider apparently had much to say on plans for the camera, too. It's expected to be a 13-megapixel affair and could see other upgrades over its predecessor, including optical image stabilization and 3x optical zoom. According to the official, no final decisions on the camera have been made yet, but with less than four months to go until IFA (where the previous Notes have debuted), it's probably time to start nailing those specs down.

Newly single Robert Pattinson and Katy Perry spotted on wedding date?

Robert Pattinson recently split from long-term love Kristen Stewart, while Katy Perry has been single since ending things with John Mayer in the spring.

And now it seems the pair are mending their broken hearts together after they were spotted hanging out in Santa Barbara, close to where Katy grew up.

Rob, 27, and 28-year-old Katy confused onlookers when they were seen at a wedding rehearsal of two strangers at San Ysidro Ranch.

Guest Stephanie Sands told People.com: "Katy and Rob were just sitting next to each other watching the wedding rehearsal in the main courtyard area. They were dressed very casually.

"She was wearing a hoodie and big sunglasses."

But Stephanie seemed sure there was no signs of romance between the pair.

She added: "They just sat together and watched.

"They were not affiliated with the wedding party and were not seen mingling with guests."

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson

Katy and Rob have been friends for a while and would often spend time together along with the Twilight actor's then-girlfriend, Kristen.

But it seems instead of comforting her actress friend, Katy is choosing to spend time with Rob.

Brit heartthrob Rob dumped Kristen earlier this month after four years together when their relationship failed to recover following a cheating scandal last summer.

Kristen, 23, was caught kissing her married Snow White And The Huntsman director Rupert Sanders and though Rob took her back a few months later, it seems he struggled to trust her.

It was claimed that Katy was never supportive of the reconciliation.

A source told Life & Style magazine: "Katy never really supported Rob's decision to get back with Kristen. She always said they wouldn't last.

"Katy told Rob she didn't think their relationship could withstand the cheating scandal."

Just last Sunday, Rob was spotted moving his belongings out of Kristen's home in Los Feliz and the last of his bits were picked up by a truck the following Thursday.

But it seems he's coping OK with the break-up.

A source said: "Rob has never felt so free. He no longer has to feel weighted by a girlfriend.

"Instead of being bummed that his relationship hit a wall, Rob is simply glad to only have to be in charge of himself."

NANCY GIRL: MEMORIAL WEEKEND TRIP TO THE RANCH PART 3

Let's just do this as a picture story...it was really relaxing (for the most part) and truly inspirational for my creative head. I am also brainstorming some beauty or candy ideas or something I can do with the natural resources there (like all the fruit and natural herbs and trees, etc)...

One more post next and then we'll plunge right back into Resort. Hope you all had a great weekend. Even though I didn't do any vintage shopping (which is amazing here) or writing (which I needed to tackle but did not), I still got a lot out of it. ?

(AP) ? Everyone's favorite literary singleton will return in a new novel entitled "Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy."

Publishers disclosed the title of Helen Fielding's forthcoming book on Tuesday.

It continues the comic saga of diary-writing Bridget's romantic and professional adventures.

The character, introduced to readers in two 1990s' novels, now must cope with an age of text messaging and social media.

Fielding said Bridget is older now and her "life has moved on. But, the question is, just how much?"

The previous books, "Bridget Jones's Diary" and "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," sold 15 million copies between them and were adapted into movies starring Renee Zellweger.

The new book will be published Oct. 10 in Britain by Jonathan Cape, and Oct. 15 in the U.S. by Alfred A. Knopf.

Goodwill? Honors Veterans And Military Families On Memorial Day And Throughout The Year

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 27, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Americans take time to honor veterans and active military service members on Memorial Day, Goodwill continues its commitment of meeting their specialized employment needs. Each day, Goodwill honors their service by providing veterans and military families with tailored job training, and career and transitional services to help them find jobs as civilians and build their careers once their military service ends.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20090716/DC47803LOGO)

The career needs of American veterans are diverse and vary by population. In particular, Goodwill has shown success in assisting the growing number of female veterans, and women now make up approximately 15 percent of the U.S. military population, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. Eighteen percent of the people helped by Goodwill's Operation: GoodJobs program, funded by the Walmart Foundation, have been women, giving Goodwill unique expertise on their job training and community needs.

"Whether our veterans are women, minorities, young adults or they have disabilities, Goodwill provides the tailored employment advice and services they need to build their next careers," said Jim Gibbons, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. "Our veterans are ready to work and Goodwill is committed to helping them meet their goals of earning jobs and caring for their families."

Goodwill has been committed to helping veterans transition from military service to civilian employment since World War I. Funders and government leaders have taken note of this expertise and have entrusted Goodwill agencies around the United States with grant funding geared directly to veterans.

The Walmart Foundation funds Goodwill's Operation: GoodJobs program, which helps veterans create individualized plans to support the needs of their families and provide job training and placement services to help them build their financial security. In addition, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation?funds Vested in Veterans, which builds on existing Goodwill programs that connects veterans with community college courses, job search and placement services, and individualized career and financial plans to support their personal goals.

Goodwill has provided services to more than 99,380 veteran and military family members, including people such as Ishenia Mumphord and Sara Ethridge.

Former Army Sergeant and single mother Mumphord returned from three tours of duty in Iraq to a tough job market. She had a hard time earning employment with an expired commercial driver's license, out-of-date certifications, and a resume that did not adequately reflect her skills. She came to Goodwill Industries of Houston's Operation: GoodJobs program for assistance. Her Goodwill employment specialist led her through resume and interviewing workshops. They worked together to improve her resume to better represent her skills, and updated her commercial driver's license. As a result of these efforts, she earned a job as a manager at a major trucking firm. Mumphord also received financial coaching, which helped her buy her first house before the arrival of her second child. She says she is very grateful for the employment and financial guidance she received from the Operation: GoodJobs program.

Ethridge was discharged while her husband was in the military. She then became discharged as a disabled veteran. While caring for her husband and raising two children, she realized that she was her family's only resource for stability and income.?After serving in the Marines for eight years, she moved her family to her hometown of Roanoke, VA. After two years, Ethridge continued to struggle to find suitable employment to support her family.? The local One Stop Career Center referred her to Goodwill Industries of the Valleys (Roanoke, VA) where she became a participant in a Goodwill Beyond Jobs program, funded by the Walmart Foundation, which provides community resources to women so they can achieve family and financial stability, through job readiness training, and job placement services. Ethridge received tips from the human resources team as well as a redesign of her resume from the community college career coach. She also enrolled in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) program. Ethridge eventually applied for a job at Goodwill.? She excelled in her interview and was offered a job as the Rapid Response Employment for Veterans Program Coordinator in Roanoke, VA.? She continues to attend financial literacy classes and has begun saving for her children's college tuition and her retirement.

"Ishenia and Sarah are great examples of what our veterans can achieve with just a little support from community-based organizations like Goodwill," said Gibbons.

Alien planets could shed light on Earth's climate future

NASA

Comparing the climates of the terrestrial planets Mars, Earth and Venus is a complex task.

By Leslie Mullen, Astrobiology Magazine, SPACE.com

A Comparative Climatology Symposium held at NASA Headquarters on May 7 focused on new approaches to climate research by highlighting the similarities and contrasts between the environments of the rocky worlds Venus, Earth, Mars and Saturn?s smoggy moon Titan.?

The symposium also included discussions about exoplanets, the sun and past, present and future space missions.

John Grunsfeld, Associate Administrator for NASA?s Science Mission Directorate, said that the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope will be able to make important observations of the atmospheres of exoplanets. [Photos: The James Webb Space Telescope]

He said JWST won?t be able to locate the exoplanets, only study them, but the recently selected TESS mission could act as a? planet scout for JWST targets. It is estimated that TESS will discover around 300 "super-Earth" alien planets, many of them in the habitable zone.

But the number one challenge, Grunsfeld noted, is figuring out the climate of our own planet.

Understanding climate change
Jim Green, NASA?s Planetary Science Division Director, said that one goal is to examine a variety of planetary bodies as a system, to see if there are trends or similarities. He also pointed out that from a planetary scientist?s perspective, climate change on our planet is not a new thing.

"Earth?s climate has done nothing but change," Green said.?

Green said that three Earth-observing satellites will be launched this year, and they will help us better understand how the climate is currently changing and the implications that has for our planet?s environment.

David Grinspoon, holder of the first Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress chair in Astrobiology, talked about Mars? "ferocious and interesting" meteorology, and how Martian global dust storms may help unravel what happened on our planet during the K-T extinction 65 million years ago, when an asteroid hitting the Yucatan Peninsula is thought to have eradicated 75 percent of animals and plants on Earth, including the dinosaurs. [Wipeout: History's Most Mysterious Extinctions]

The 'Venus mafia'
As for Venus, Grinspoon said scientists believe current-day volcanism on Venus is thought to be necessary to sustain the planet?s thick clouds. He added that the active surface has eradicated most ancient rocks, preventing us from easily understanding Venus? early history.

Grinspoon also discussed the unique climate of Titan, noting that the methane cycle on this moon of Saturn is "like Earth's hydrological cycle on steroids."

Studying the climates of Mars, Venus, Titan and even exoplanets could help us refine our climate models of the Earth. However, Grinspoon said that "clouds are the biggest uncertainty in understanding the past of Venus and predicting the future of Earth."

Tying climatology to astrobiology, Grinspoon said that our expectations of the other planets, in the absence of data, were that they'd be much more Earth-like than they actually are. We still haven?t found a planet quite like our own, although astronomers are zeroing in on exoplanets that should have habitable conditions.

But, Grinspoon said, "it may be that conditions for life's origin aren't rare, but the hard part is the persistence of habitable conditions."

Venus was a popular topic during the symposium. Roald Sagdeev, University of Maryland professor and former director of the Space Research Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, said during an overview of the Russian missions to Venus that "from the point of view of habitability, Venus is like having a dead body to study, which is of course very useful for learning anatomy."

David Crisp, Senior Research Scientist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory/California Institute of Technology, said that sending weather balloons to Venus taught us a lot about atmospheric physics. And Roger Bonnet, Executive Director of the International Space Science Institute, said there was no chance for a big "flagship" mission to Venus, since the viewpoint among many amounts to "Who cares about clouds and wind on Venus, when we have so much of that on Earth? We want to see little green men!"

One participant noted the presence of "the Venus mafia" at the symposium, inferring that the focus on Earth?s "twin planet" had muscled out discussion of other places of interest.?

Habitable exoplanets
But in addition to studies of Venus and other terrestrial worlds, there was a talk about our sun and its influence on space weather, and general discussions about refining climate models, defining habitable zones, and the importance of basic research.

The participants seemed to agree that, most importantly, planetary climate studies needed to be interdisciplinary, with scientists from different fields communicating and collaborating.

Michael Meyer, lead scientist for the Mars Exploration Program at NASA Headquarters, also pointed out that we should never become complacent in our scientific understanding. For instance, he said that while climate models have not been able to make early Mars warm enough to sustain liquid water on its surface, the same can be true for models of the young Earth.?

And when it comes to understanding where a planet needs to reside in its solar system to be habitable ? the so-called Goldilocks Zone where the temperature is just right for water to be liquid rather than ice or gas ? he commented that "the approach [to the habitable zone] is very Goldilocks in that it's almost a fairy tale."???

Finally, Meyer noted, just when we thought we understood how planets are made, we discovered hot Jupiters and other unusual exoplanets that "turned all of our planet formation models on their head."?

"And that?s a good thing," he added.

The featured speakers at NASA's Comparative Climatology Symposium, titled "New Approaches to Climate Research," were John Grunsfeld, Jim Green, David Grinspoon, Lori Glaze, Mark Bullock, Roald Sagdeev, Jack Kaye, Lennart Bengtsson, David Crisp, Roger Bonnet, Mark Marley, and Madhulika Guhathakurta.

Mosses frozen in time come back to life

Buried under a glacier for hundreds of years, plants regrow in the lab

Being run over by a massive glacier is not a death sentence for some hardy Arctic plants. After hundreds of years buried under ice, mosses can regrow, biologists report May 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The revived plants come from Canada?s Ellesmere Island, where the Teardrop Glacier has retreated since the end of a cold period in 1550 to 1850 known as the Little Ice Age. On recently exposed ground, Catherine La Farge of the University of Alberta in Edmonton and colleagues found clumps of mosses that looked dead. But among the brown tangles, the team noticed a few green sprigs.

The team took brown moss samples back to the lab and used radiocarbon dating to determine that they had lived about 400 years ago. Based on the glacier?s retreat rate, the researchers estimated the plants had been uncovered for less than two years.

Next, the team ground up some of the plants and gave them nutrients, water and light.?We didn?t do anything fancy,? La Farge says. From seven of 24 samples, a total of four moss species grew. The budding plants didn?t come from seeds or spores. In mosses, she says, any cell can be reset, almost like a stem cell, to grow a new plant.

Exactly how long a moss cell can stay viable is ?anyone?s guess,? La Farge says. But the findings suggest that the regenerated mosses may help repopulate ecosystems after glaciers retreat.

Iran fields 'massive' number of missile launchers

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? An Iranian semi-official news agency reports the country has fielded a "massive" number of new long-range missile launchers.

The Sunday report by Fars quotes Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi as saying the new weapons enable Iranian forces to "crush the enemy" with the mass simultaneous fire of long-range surface-to-surface missiles.

The report did not specify the type of missile that would be fired, nor more details on the number of launchers deployed.

Some of Iran's surface-to-surface missiles are estimated to have ranges of over 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles), capable of hitting its arch-foe Israel and the U.S. bases in the region.

Vahidi did not specify who was the "enemy" and said Iran would never start a war.

From time to time Iran announces military achievements that cannot be independently verified.

Official: 2 dead after Angel Flight crashes in NY

EPHRATAH, N.Y. (AP) ? A small airplane operating as a volunteer Angel Flight crashed in upstate New York on Friday evening, killing at least two people, authorities said.

Fulton County Sheriff Thomas Lorey said the flight's two passengers were found dead and investigators are searching for the pilot, who is missing. Officials did not immediately identify the passengers or pilot.

The Piper PA 34 airplane originated in Massachusetts and crashed about a half-mile west of Caroga, N.Y., just after 5 p.m. Friday, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said.

Lorey said the twin-engine plane crashed in a wooded area in Ephratah, about an hour west of Albany

"The bulk of the plane is in the water, in a pond, completely submerged and we have to wait until daylight to put divers in," the sheriff said.

Larry Camerlin, president and founder of Angel Flight Northeast, a nonprofit group that arranges free air transportation for sick patients from volunteer pilots, said the organization was "tremendously saddened" by the tragic news of the crash.

"We all offer our thoughts and prayers to the families of those affected," Camerlin said in a statement. "Our volunteer pilots are the most compassionate and generous individuals who donate their time, aircraft and fuel to transport patients and loved ones for free to essential medical care that would otherwise not be readily available to them. There are no words that can adequately express our sorrow."

An employee at an ice cream shop in nearby Johnstown who refused to give her name said she heard what sounded like engine failure and then a loud explosion, "like a gun shot."

She said she went outside and "there were pieces of airplane coming out of the sky."

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, including what the weather conditions were like at the time of the accident.

At the time of the crash, in Rome, N.Y., visibility was 10 miles, there was slight rain and winds of about 13 to 14 mph, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Montgomery.

The flight departed from Hanscom Field in Bedford, Mass., and was headed to Rome, N.Y., before crashing about 57 miles to the east, near Caroga, according to Bergen.

Camerlin's statement said that since Angel Flight NE was founded in 1996, the group has set up free air transportation and medical care for more than 65,000 children and adults on about 60,000 flights covering a total of more than 12 million miles.

Beekeeper Albert Honig was finishing breakfast when he heard the bees along the utility wires. Following the agitated noise to his estranged neighbors? house, he found the Bee Ladies, Claire and Hilda Straussman, bound and dead on the floor and bees swarming down their chimney.

Once the closest person to Albert on earth, he and Claire hadn?t spoken in the 10 years before her death.

?Telling the Bees? is an elegiac, contemplative mystery that has sparked comparisons with literary heavyweights such as Kazuo Ishiguro?s Man Booker Prize-winner ?The Remains of the Day? and Marilynne Robinson?s Pulitzer Prize-winning ?Gilead.? ?

If anything, Albert has even less awareness of his fellow beings than the repressed butler in ?Remains of the Day," so consumed is he with his books and his bees.

?Though I have lived my entire life within five miles of the Pacific Ocean, as the crow flies, I have yet to see it firsthand,? Albert says in one of the most melancholy sentences of the book. ?Looking back now, I think I might have enjoyed the view.?

?Telling the Bees? is more than nominally a mystery, but Hesketh is also conducting an exploration into a now-vanished southern California world of almond, citrus, and walnut groves, where people knew their neighbors, but politeness meant not disturbing the surface to see the horror underneath.

After the murders, Albert finds himself haunted by a quote from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: ??The cruelest lies are often told in silence.?... And kept in darkness, I should like to add.?

The investigation is headed up by the highly competent, sardonic Detective Grayson, who musters a startling amount of patience in the face of Albert?s arcane facts about apiaries. More than dithering, Albert uses his tangents to conceal facts about the Straussmans in an effort to protect the reputation of the dead.

Not having a double murder to solve, this reader couldn?t get enough of the mixture of folklore and science. The title comes from the folk custom of ?telling the bees? when their keeper has died. In a sign of how out of joint the time has become, no one tells the Bee Ladies? hives that their mistress is gone.

?Bees do not thrive in a quarrelsome family. They dislike bad language. And they should never, ever be bought or sold for money,? Alfred?s dad tells him.

The murders carry Albert back past their last fight to his childhood, when the Straussman girls ? doughy, silent Hilda and quicksilver-like Claire ? moved in next door to Albert with their hag of a mother and mostly unseen father.

Claire caught bee fever the day Albert?s dad had the girl put her hand into a swarm. (That, Albert explains, is when bees are at their most docile and least inclined to sting.) Enchanted by the warm, soft, accepting presence of the furry bodies, Claire is hooked.

By their teens, Albert is almost wordlessly in love with his friend, who dreams of far-off places.

?Honestly, Claire, I see no need to look beyond my own backyard to find whatever my heart desires,? is the closest he can come to telling her.

Claire, meanwhile, knows that his unbending honesty means she can?t confide in him.

?I trust your heart, Albert. It?s that darn head of yours,? she tells him.

Albert always believed the estrangement with Claire would be a temporary one, and the method of its finality consumes him with guilt.

?I do believe now that I may have been the only one who might have lifted the shroud of pain that cloaked the dark interior of the Straussman house while anyone worth caring about still lived within, but for any number of reasons, I did not,? he says. ?In my own defense, I can only say that Saint Thomas Aquinas once wrote that there are three things necessary for the salvation of man: to know what he ought to believe, to know what he ought to desire, and to know what he ought to do.... When I take into account my lifelong connection to the Straussman family I find my personal salvation wanting on all three counts.?

While readers are likely to find themselves longing for a plate of buttered toast and honey, there's nothing "cozy" about ?Telling the Bees? ? it?s downright gorgeous.

Yvonne Zipp is the Monitor fiction critic.

Renan Barao, John Cholish and Cain Velasquez: See where they fell on Cagewriter?s Hot or Not list

As another week of MMA comes to a close, let's take a look at what was hot and what was not so hot.

Hot -- Bryan Pedersen: Many legislators have talked about the economic benefits of MMA when the sport is legalized. Few have gone the extra mile to find out what it feels like to be in a cage to fight. Pedersen will do that in Cheyenne, Wyo., this weekend. No matter the result, it's admirable that he has even gone the distance to train and join the first fights to take place in Wyoming's capitol.

Not -- Renan Barao: The interim bantamweight men's champ was injured and had to pull out of his main event bout with Eddie Wineland at UFC 161. Dan Henderson and Rashad Evans' fight is now the main event, and Roy Nelson vs. Stipe Miocic was added.

Hot -- John Cholish: After losing to Gleison Tibau at UFC on FX 8, Cholish decided to hang up his fighting gloves. Before he left, he decided to give his fight purse to Oklahoma tornado survivors.

Kudos to Cholish.

Not -- Brett Atchley: The manager who specializes in female fighters has been accused of bad behavior by several fighters separately. His alleged improprieties include accosting fighters, telling them he would "blackball them" from Invicta though president Shannon Knapp has denied anyone has the power to do this, and sharing the confidential details of a client's contract. His response?

"It's really easy for women to play the victim, especially when they make their mind up that they're going to do it. Because everyone will believe them," Atchley said to MMA Junkie.

Stereotyping women is not a smart thing to do, particularly by someone who makes his living off of them.

Still taking temperature -- Cain Velasquez: He lost the UFC heavyweight championship belt once, and managed to get it back. Will he defend it on Saturday night against Antonio Silva at UFC 160?

Thanks for reading Cagewriter this week. Check us out on Twitter and Facebook for bonus UFC 160 coverage.

In Iowa, GOP's Walker preps for presidential run

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ? Scott Walker tried to introduce himself to Iowa Republicans Thursday as so many would-be presidential candidates often do ? one of their own.

After all, the Wisconsin governor weighing a 2016 bid for president spent seven years as a young child living in Plainfield, a tiny town in northeast Iowa Walker referred to a half-dozen times during a 40 minute speech at a Republican fundraiser.

More broadly, the rising GOP figure prescribed what he characterized as a Midwestern approach to politics and the way for Republicans, back-to-back White House losers, to win again.

"I would encourage us all to be more optimistic, more relevant and more courageous," Walker told 600 GOP activists in a suburban Des Moines hotel ballroom. "I think when we do, we win in Iowa, we win in Wisconsin, and all across this great country, and we transform this place we live in."

The first-term governor, who has won party acclaim for taking on unions and overcame a contentious recall election, has been raising his national profile with speeches to national Republican audiences in recent months and headlined fundraisers in New York and Connecticut this week.

Walker was making his first visit Thursday to the state that has traditionally held the first presidential caucuses. He was the keynote speaker at the Polk County Republican Party's annual spring fundraising dinner and also met privately with leaders at a separate fundraiser before the banquet.

The audience applauded when he noted during the speech how he won a larger victory in defeating Democratic Mayor Tom Barrett of Milwaukee during the recall vote last year than he did in his 2010 election. They cheered again when he described the budget surplus Wisconsin has today, compared with the $3.6 billion deficit in place when he took office.

"Scott Walker is a great example of a courageous governor who made the tough decisions and has the state going in the right direction," said Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad, a Republican who attended the event.

Walker opponents, including some who traveled from Milwaukee, said earlier Thursday that Walker had overpromised the number of jobs he would bring in. Wisconsin's unemployment has dropped during his time in office, albeit less dramatically than in other Midwestern states such as Michigan and Ohio.

Walker kept returning in his remarks to his time in Iowa, as a boy, and the son of a Baptist minister. Walker moved to southern Wisconsin when he was 10.

He ticked through the name of a former teacher, a neighbor and the state legislator-turned congressman, "a farmer down the way from us named Chuck Grassley." Grassley is now Iowa's senior U.S. senator, serving his sixth term.

Should he decide to run for president, Walker's Iowa ties and evangelical upbringing could serve him well in Iowa's Republican caucuses, where Christian conservatives make up an influential bloc.

Walker didn't touch social issues. Instead, he urged the party to reach out to voting blocs Republicans have struggled to win, such as Latinos. Walker trumpeted his success winning Hispanic-leaning precincts when he was Milwaukee County executive before being elected governor.

"We've got a message of opportunity and optimism. We've got to be willing to go to places that Republicans typically don't go," he said.

It's a style that works for Connie Schmett, a Des Moines-area Republican who contributed money to Walker's recall campaign and attended the event Thursday.

"He's like your brother, your neighbor," she said. "I've seen a lot of these guys. And he just seems like a good guy."

IRS official at center of scandal put on administrative leave

By Kim Dixon and Patrick Temple-West

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Lois Lerner, an Internal Revenue Service official at the center of the scandal over the agency's extra scrutiny of conservative groups, was put on administrative leave on Thursday after she refused to resign, a U.S. senator said.

Republican Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa said new acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel was the one who asked for Lerner's resignation.

An IRS spokesman declined to comment on Lerner's status, citing privacy concerns. However, an internal memo supplied by the agency named Lerner's replacement.

An aide to Grassley said Werfel spoke with Grassley's office on Thursday afternoon and conveyed the information.

A bipartisan chorus in Congress had been calling for her to go. Democratic Senator Carl Levin and Republican Senator John McCain had written to Werfel earlier on Thursday calling for her to be removed.

The move comes one day after Lerner refused to answer questions during a House of Representatives panel hearing into why workers in a Cincinnati, Ohio, field office of the IRS in early 2010 began targeting conservative groups for extra scrutiny when they applied for tax exempt status.

Lerner oversaw the tax-exempt division.

Lerner's lawyer, William Taylor, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"From all accounts so far, the IRS acting commissioner was on solid ground to ask for her resignation," Grassley said in a statement.

He also said that Lerner "shouldn't be in limbo indefinitely on the taxpayers' dime."

On Wednesday, Lerner denied she had done anything wrong, but asserted her constitutional right against self-incrimination.

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa has accused Lerner of providing "false or misleading information" to his committee on four occasions last year.

Lerner was the official who first publicly acknowledged the targeting by responding to a planted question about the topic at an American Bar Association conference on May 10.

The admission came before a Treasury Department inspector general report found that workers in the Cincinnati office used "inappropriate criteria" such as the terms "Tea Party" and "Patriots" to target the applications of conservative groups for intense scrutiny.

Werfel, a White House budget official who officially started at the IRS on Wednesday, announced Lerner's replacement in an employee memo on Thursday.

Ken Corbin, a deputy director in charge of the wage and investment division, will take over as acting director of the tax exempt organizations unit, Werfel said, without acknowledging Lerner.

Werfel himself took over for Acting Commissioner Steve Miller, who was fired by President Barack Obama over the controversy last week.
