The smart grid communications space is already noisy and contentious. Technologies such as RF mesh, point-to-point, powerline, 3G, 4G/LTE, WiMax, WiFi and ZigBee are already competing.

Now a UK company says TV white space could be a superior solution. TV white space is the "buffer zone" that separates over-the-air TV broadcasts. As television goes digital, many people argue that space should be released for other uses.

UK-based TTP argues that it would be ideal for the smart grid, with potential to deliver information at high data rates over long distances, with low latency and at low cost.

A?warning: The TV white space situation is in great flux. We don't think serious adoption will begin until there is regulatory clarity. In the meantime it is an intriguing but inherently risky proposition.
