Boston bombing suspect moved to prison facility

>> following that breaking news tied to the boston marathon attack.

>> that's right, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev has now been confined at the bureau of prison federal medical center at ft. devins after being moved overnight.

>> we go right to nbc's jeff rossen for more and the suspect's plans for an alleged attack in times square .

>> reporter: good morning, we begin with breaking news, there have been outcries because dzhokhar tsarnaev had been treated at beth israel medical center the same exact hospital where many victims were treated. earlier this morning he was transported to this federal prison at fort devens , massachusetts, 40 miles outside of boston to the west. it is a specialized facility that treats inmates with long-term medical needs and also on a decommissioned military base. the u.s. marshal service confirmed the move overnight. let's get you up to date on the latest plan to attack times square . this was not a well planned attack thought out for months. instead the suspects came up with this on the fly last thursday and we're going to drive here to times square that night with six new bombs. officials now say if not for this shoot-out last week with watertown police, tamerlan and dzhokhar tsarnaev may have gone through with it. they just carjacked this mercedes suv. overnight the carjacking victim, a chinese entrepreneur providing new details to "the boston globe ." "don't look at me he says tamerlan yelled at him. later tamer lane says okay you're chinese, i'm a muslim. chinese are friendly to muslims. the victim responded we are so friendly to muslims. the victim was able to get away but during that ride the brothers hatched the new plan, drive to new york 's times square and set off their remaining explosives.

>> one was a pressure cooker bomb similar to the two that had exploded at the marathon. the other five were pipe bombs .

>> reporter: dzhokhar was in times square at least once last year posing with friends in this photo. luckily he didn't make it back this time.

>> they had built these additional explosives and we know they had the capacity to carry out the attacks.

>> reporter: new york city officials have high tech surveillance cameras to prevent these kinds of attacks. the nypd showed us how they can flag an abandoned package before it explodes. it gives you an image and circles the package.

>> it shows us exactly where the package was left.

>> reporter: back in boston we're learning new details about dzhokhar's bedside court appearance. source familiar with the hearing says he showed no reaction when the prosecutor explained he could face the death penalty. meanwhile his mother in russia is still defending her boys, seen here in a family photo apparently taken in 2007 .

>> i thought america was going to protect us, our kids, it's going to be safe. america took my kids away from me.

>> reporter: a live picture of times square . it is important to note that there is no credible threat to new york , but new york mayor michael bloomberg made a point in his news conference yesterday saying this plan is proof that new york city remains a prime target for terrorists. once again, savannah, to recap the breaking news overnight, dzhokhar tsarnaev, the younger suspect, the surviving suspect, moved from beth israel medical center in boston to a federal prison 40 miles west of boston where he will remain.
