1st female Iraq war resister to be court martialed

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? The first female soldier to flee the U.S. military for Canada to avoid the Iraq war is to be court-martialed Monday.

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/12wpci6 ) Pfc. Kimberly Rivera is charged with desertion and faces up to five years in prison and a dishonorable discharge if convicted.

Rivera was assigned to Fort Carson's 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in Colorado and served in Iraq in 2006. She says she became disillusioned with the mission.

While on a two-week leave in the U.S. in 2007, she crossed the Canadian border after she was ordered to serve another tour in Iraq. Rivera applied for permanent residency, but Canadian immigration officials ordered the mother of four to leave the country or face deportation.

She was arrested last year at the U.S. border.

SURFSIDE BEACH: Grand Strand libraries adding e-books, other ...

? It?s a bit ironic that Les and JoAnna Jones are getting a tutorial on how to use their new Kindle in a conference room at the Surfside Beach Library filled with stacks and stacks of hardback books.

But it?s not as ironic as it once was because of the way libraries are adapting to emerging technology.

The physical selections in the Surfside Beach Library run the gamut from classics and poetry to self help and non-fiction.

Now, any of those genres are just a click away on devices such as the one the Joneses are trying to master.

Welcome to entertainment and information in the 21st century, where more and more people are trading in their library cards, video store memberships and newspaper subscriptions for e-readers, Netflix and online news gathering.

The Horry County Memorial Library System has officially joined the fray, having recently begun offering e-books to its patrons.

In 2009, when the county began a $12-million building program that officially ends Tuesday with the reopening ceremony for the newly-renovated Bucksport Library, some residents were skeptical.

Cliff Boyer, director of the Horry County Memorial Library System, fielded questions about whether the new libraries ? in North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Aynor, Carolina Forest and Bucksport ? were a good investment given the emergence of the Internet.

?We?ve got Google. Why do we need libraries?? they?d ask.

Google and other such search engines are good for certain things, but that?s not a good substitute for a well-staffed library that helps patrons become more information literate, he told them.

To that end, while there are no plans for more new libraries in Horry County, the library?s small selection of e-books ? 340 strong ? is expected to continue growing.

?New technology doesn?t kill the old technology. It just compliments it,? said Michael Easler, a reference librarian at Surfside Beach Library who offers one-on-one sessions on how to use e-readers.

Easler was working with the Joneses Thursday morning. The couple got their new Kindle as a gift from their son and were filled with questions, such as the difference between wireless and Wifi access, how much data it takes to stream a movie, an explanation on what the magnifying glass icon is ? it?s a search engine ? and how to read books.

?This is a new world to us,? Les Jones said.

The Surfside Beach couple have always read books and watched movies in the traditional way. That will change once they?ve mastered the Kindle, a device they revere for its small size and sheer convenience.

?It?s a take and go,? JoAnna Jones said.

Boyer said it was two years ago that a drop in price led to the ?Kindle Christmas? and an upswing in requests for e-books.

After some false starts, library officials decided in January to go with 3M Cloud Library to satisfy e-readers. Patrons began choosing amongst the 340 e-books currently available just a few weeks ago.

Boyer said the service is efficient because it works across multiple devices such as Kindles, iPads, iPhones, Windows PC and Mac.

?It was one of the few you could actually return a book early,? he said.

The selection started out so small because the library only had $10,000 in their budget to put toward e-books, Boyer added. It?s going to continue to grow on a regular basis, with officials putting some of its requested $600,000 for the 2014 fiscal year into growing not only its e-book selection, but other media such as downloadable audio books.

Tracey Elvis, youth services librarian for Conway Library, said streaming media was a part of the conversation when library officials spent $4.1 million on a new facility in 2006.

Was it worth the investment? Elvis thinks so.

?We needed more room for everything,? she said.

Conway Library went from a building housing eight public computers to one with 28. And they?re always occupied, Elvis said.

?Libraries will be here to stay, even with e-books,? she said.

A new library is expected to open in Pawleys Island in August 2014, said Patti Burns, head of adult service with the Georgetown County Library System.

Georgetown County?s libraries offer almost 1,600 e-books to readers, Burns added. She said they do create a little concern, especially when a new library will be built soon, but ultimately the e-books are a product patrons still have to check out.

Plus, Georgetown County?s libraries offer computers, gaming, faxing, local history and genealogy, she said.

?We?re not just books,? Burns said.

The streaming of popular media continues to grow, but to the detriment of those companies still peddling the physical product.

In January, Dish Network Corp. announced its plans to close about 300 Blockbuster stores across the country, losing about 3,000 employees and leaving only 500 locations left in the U.S.

That?s in sharp constant to the video streaming and DVD-by-mail service, Netflix, which last week announced it gained two million subscribers in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2013.

Netflix took its first major leap in a new direction in early February with the debut of "House of Cards," a critically acclaimed series made exclusively for Netflix.

Then there are newspapers, which have suffered for years as more and more readers flock to the Internet and social media for details on events both locally and nationally. Layoffs and furloughs are a reality for journalists all across the country.

As far as libraries go, Boyer isn?t expecting the same fate.

?I love the business model. You can sell the books and never have a warehouse,? Boyer said.

E-books won?t make libraries obsolete, despite publishers saying only 50 percent of their content will be available in hardback in five years, he said.

Libraries will continue to adapt, just like they did with the release of VHS tapes, DVDs, Blu rays and, of course, the Internet.

There are many other uses for libraries beyond simply checking out a book or movie, Boyer said.

?People still need help connecting with information,? he said.

That?s evident in couples like the Joneses, or, as Boyer mentioned, someone who gets a specific medical diagnosis and comes to a local library and finds relevant information within its various databases.

While there are no new libraries on the horizon, officials hope to integrate a virtual branch this fall.

It will be available anywhere there?s internet access and will feature e-books, downloadable videos and audio books.

It?s all part of what Boyer says is the library system?s adapting to this new media age.

Ultimately, e-books will sit alongside physical books for readers? attention. But one, Boyer feels, won?t replace the other.

?It?s a sensory experience when you read. It?s not just the eyes; it?s the feel of a book. Those things will never be replaced,? he said.

F. Scott Fitzgerald's handwritten ledger online

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ? An intriguing peek into the daily scribbles and life of author F. Scott Fitzgerald is now available online, just weeks before the opening of the movie "The Great Gatsby."

Researchers from the University of South Carolina's Thomas Cooper Library put a digital version of the famed author's handwritten financial ledger on their website last week, making it available for the first time for all readers, students and scholars.

"This is a record of everything Fitzgerald wrote, and what he did with it, in his own hand," said Elizabeth Sudduth, director of the Ernest F. Hollings Library and Rare Books Collection.

During a recent visit to the library's below-ground rare-book vault, Sudduth took the original 200-page book out of its clamshell protective cover. The ledger's yellowed pages ? with Fitzgerald's elegant, measured cursive strokes ? are a throwback to life before computer spreadsheets. The ledger shows Fitzgerald's tally of earnings from his works, the most famous of which is the novel "The Great Gatsby." The ledger lists his many short stories, books, and adaptations for stage and screen.

With the May 10 release of a new "Gatsby" movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Sudduth says library officials expect an upswing in interest in its Fitzgerald collection. The ledger will be on display at the library for about a month starting May 6, Sudduth said.

The library's Fitzgerald collection is considered the world's most comprehensive, with more than 3,000 publications, manuscripts, letters, book editions, screenplays and memorabilia. It also includes Fitzgerald's walking stick, briefcase and an engraved silver flask his wife gave him in 1918.

Some parts of the collection already are online. With the ledger's move to the website and the timing of the movie, Sudduth said, officials hope to call more attention to the collection.

In the ledger, Fitzgerald lists in carefully laid out columns his various pieces of writing, the location they were printed, and the income they produced. Fitzgerald's comments are sprinkled throughout. One describes the year 1919 ? when his first novel was accepted for publication and Zelda Sayre agreed to marry him, as ? "The most important year of life. Every emotion and my life work decided. Miserable and ecstatic but a great success."

By the time Fitzgerald started the ledger, Sudduth said, "he probably knew what he was doing. He left a space for his remarks, and then the final disposition."

With a laugh, she noted: "We know he didn't spell very well. And his arithmetic wasn't much better,"

But the overall document, she said, "shows that he was far more on top of his affairs than people thought," given a reputation in later life as a heavy drinker.

"He was keeping a record of his work for the future," Suddeth said. "He kept it, he updated it."

For the past 30 years, researchers have had to rely on a limited print facsimile of the ledger, which didn't catch the varied inks and scripts in Fitzgerald's hand.

Park Bucker, a USC associate English professor, said he's excited to discuss the new ledger with his students.

"It may be a unique artifact among American authors," Bucker said. "This is going to be an amazing thing for students to pore over and dip into. He created his own database. We do it on computers now, but he did it for himself,"

Bucker also said students are fascinated by seeing something a well-known author penned in his own hand.

"Students always remark how much they love his handwriting," he said. "They think his handwriting is just beautiful, and handwriting isn't valued today."

Bucker pointed out that the ledger shows Fitzgerald made most of his income from short stories and that he was able to earn a living from his literary work. "It was the rarest of things, an author who made a living," Bucker said.

In 1925, the ledger shows Fitzgerald earned less than $2,000 for the "Gatsby" book ? the same amount he received for a single short story published in The Saturday Evening Post.

In later years, Fitzgerald added more earnings from "The Great Gatsby." He sold the foreign motion picture rights for $16,666, as noted in the ledger. In another section, he lists about $5,000 in earnings from "Gatsby" when it ran as a play in New York, Chicago and elsewhere.

USC Professor Matthew Bruccoli began to acquire items for the Fitzgerald collection in the 1950s. He received some, including the ledger, from the author's only child, daughter Frances Scott Fitzgerald, also known as Scottie. Bruccoli wanted the collection to be used as a teaching and research tool, and he gave it to the university in 1994.

Bruccoli has since died, but the collection has continued to grow. It is now is valued at more than $4 million, Sudduth said.

July sentencing date in attack on Christian group

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A Virginia man who pleaded guilty to three charges in a shooting that wounded a security guard inside the Washington headquarters of a conservative Christian lobbying group awaits sentencing in mid-summer.

A judge on Monday scheduled a July 15 sentencing for Floyd Corkins II, who prosecutors say planned a mass shooting at the Family Research Council in August. Prosecutors have recommended a 45-year prison sentence.

Corkins pleaded guilty in February to interstate transportation of a firearm, assault with intent to kill while armed and committing an act of terrorism while armed.

Authorities said the security guard was the only person wounded as he subdued Corkins in the lobby of the conservative group and Corkin fired three shots.

Corkins told authorities he had planned to kill as many people as possible.

SpaceShipTwo goes supersonic on first powered flight

Private joyrides and research trips to the edge of space just got closer to reality. Today Virgin Galactic's suborbital plane SpaceShipTwo fired its thrusters mid-air and completed its first rocket-powered test flight high over the Mojave desert.

The commercial space plane, docked to its carrier mothership WhiteKnightTwo, took off from the Mojave Air and Space Port in southern California at 14.02 UTC Monday. The pair rose to an altitude of about 14 kilometres, and then the carrier ship released SpaceShipTwo.

Moments later, test pilots Mark Stucky and Mike Alsbury triggered ignition of the rocket motor, which flared dramatically, prompting cheers and applause from spectators on the ground.

The engine burn lasted for 16 seconds. Under its own power, SpaceShipTwo climbed to 16.7 kilometres and accelerated to 1470 kilometres per hour ? just over the speed of sound ? before beginning its descent. The entire test flight lasted about 10 minutes and ended with a smooth landing back at the spaceport.

Transformational flight

"Today's supersonic success opens the way for a rapid expansion of the spaceship's powered flight envelope, with a very realistic goal of full space flight by the year's end," Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson said in a written statement. "We saw history in the making today and I couldn't be more proud of everyone involved."

Ultimately, the ship's rockets will fire for 70 seconds, allowing it to carry six passengers and two pilots to a maximum altitude of about 100 kilometres, the unofficial boundary between Earth's atmosphere and space. Passengers will experience about 5 minutes of weightlessness before returning to Earth.

For now the cost per seat is $200,000, but Branson hopes to see trips get more affordable as private space flight becomes routine.

"This is a big step forward," says Alan Stern, an astronomer at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado and founder of private moon mission company Golden Spike. He plans to fly on a future Virgin Galactic research flight, possibly as early as 2014 if all goes well. "Suborbital is going to make a space-access revolution for researchers, educators and private individuals. It's going to be transformational."

Higher expectations for digital media at NewFronts

(AP) ? Last year, the inaugural Digital NewFronts didn't skimp on the hype.

Google, Hulu, Yahoo and others made brash, glitzy presentations to advertisers trumpeting their ascendancy in a rapidly changing media landscape. Even Jay-Z dropped by.

There will be plenty of the same this week in New York at the second Digital NewFronts, the digital world's take on the annual TV "upfront" tradition. But ahead of this year's five-day-long overture to Madison Avenue, the talk is of both the great progress of digital entertainment and unrealized promises.

"It was absolutely a learning experience," Doug McVehil, senior vice president of content and programming for the music video destination Vevo, says about last year's NewFronts."I know there's some things we can do better this year both at the presentation itself and in terms of follow-up. But we're all fairly new at this. This is a young thing for the digital media industry."

In 12 months' time, the industry has come a long way. Netflix's first major original series, "House of Cards," proved that streaming video can compete with the most prestigious cable programs. Google's YouTube rolled out its 100-plus funded channels in a bid to bring higher quality videos (and thus advertisers) to its platform. One of the biggest TV stars, Jerry Seinfeld, launched a handsome Web series, "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee."

But some of the digital series touted last year have disappointed. Although Yahoo's "Bachelor"-spoof "Burning Love" has proved a modest hit, its Tom Hanks animated sci-fi series, "Electric City," didn't live up to its creator's reputation. While the top YouTube channels have grown considerably, several of its star-driven efforts have fizzled.

"Last year, there were some big promises about not only the quality but the volume of shows that people are going to make," says Eric Berger, executive vice president of digital networks for Sony Pictures TV, which owns the video site Crackle. "If you look back over the course of the year, as we talked to brands and agencies, there're some questions about quality and about the volume of things that were actually produced."

Crackle didn't participate in the NewFronts last year but will this year. It will be promoting, among other shows, an upcoming second season of Seinfeld's series.

Naturally, growing pains are inevitable, especially when so much is changing so fast. The wide array of NewFront presenters this year exhibits the evolving nature of media companies.

New presenters include The Wall Street Journal and Conde Nast, both venerable publishers known for their print products. But Conde Nast earlier this year launched online series slates for two of its magazines (GQ and Glamour), with plans to do the same for its other properties, including Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. The Journal, more than any other newspaper, has developed live video programing with its "WSJ Live" app.

"The Journal has really transformed itself since News Corp.'s acquisition into a complete content provider and not just business, finance and economics," says Michael Rooney, chief revenue officer for The Journal, explaining its entry to the NewFronts. "The world still needs to learn and understand about that and what we have to offer."

Yahoo will come into its presentation on the heels of acquiring the rights to archival clips to all 38 years of "Saturday Night Live." YouTube recently announced that in May it will begin a series of theme weeks to highlight its premium channels, starting with comedy. On Sunday night, Vevo will kick off the fourth year of its flagship program "Unstaged," a concert live stream. (Vampire Weekend will perform with Steve Buscemi directing the webcast.)

Performances will play a big part of Vevo's presentation, with appearances by Carly Rae Jepsen, Kendrick Lamar and Jessie Ware. But McVehil says at this year's NewFronts, brands want more than a good show.

"As we mature, I think it's going to be about people looking hard at real numbers and performance and judging companies based on that more than how sexy their presentation was," McVehil says.

Some companies are going it alone. NBCUniversal's digital division, having been a part of the NewFronts last year, held a separate event in New York last week, as did the gaming network Machinima. The talent agency CAA will preview its clients' digital projects this week, but not in an official NewFront.

Still, there are close connections for several of the 18 media companies in the NewFronts. Disney Interactive has several YouTube channels and in February partnered with Vevo to produce family friendly music content.

Ad agency Universal McCann predicted deals at the NewFronts could reach $1 billion. That's still a fraction of what broadcast upfront presentations pull in, but few don't expect digital media to continue to increase their share of the advertising pie.

"We're bigger this year, both in terms of the scope of the event and the amount of content," says Mark Walker, senior vice president of Disney Interactive Entertainment. "We had a few programs before and some speculation. Now, we have conclusively demonstrated that there's a robust audience demand for the kind of high quality video content that we're producing."

Facebook And The Sudden Wake Up About The API Economy

api branchesWhat a two weeks it’s been. Something happened that has been simmering for a while. The API market exploded. Intel bought Mashery for more than $180 million and CA acquired Layer 7. 3Scale received a new $4.5 million round of funding from Javelin Ventures. Programmable Web acquired Mulesoft. And then Facebook jumped in and bought Parse. The acquisitions and funding point to a maturing market that is reflected in the ubiquity of APIs across the application landscape. It’s not a new market by any means. The space is filled with companies that have leveraged the API build out that has happened over the past several years. Instead this is an inflection point. There are more than 30,000 APIs, according to Programmable Web, the leading API directory and blog. Javelin Ventures Managing Director Noah Doyle said to me in an interview that analysts see the API market growing five to ten times over the next five years. With that scaling in number of APIs comes a virtuous circle for the developers that build compelling apps and APIs. The APIs extend the apps reach as they become part of distributed data network. As more people use the APIs so the app developer generates more data. As the data increases in scope, often the service will become an API. Facebook needs new streams of data to keep rolling out new digital products. Back end as a service providers like Parse provide SDKs and APIs that give developers access to infrastructure for storing basic data types, locations and photos. How Facebook uses this data is a question mark. But regardless, Pare serves as a constant replenishing source, nourished by the apps on the Parse platform that use APIs. Facebook now will decide how to package and segment that data to push more relevant advertising to its 1 billion users. APIs Are Like Glue APIs will be the glue to the Internet, said Programmable Web Founder John Musser. Musser, like Doyle, sees a new generation of APIs emerging that are fueled by demand, triggered by mobile devices, which serve in many respects as the new client/servers. Apps are hosted on cloud services and distributed across mobile devices that read and write data, sending and receiving information, connecting via APIs. In the first generation, Mashery and companies like Apigee pioneered the API management space. Twitter and other web companies emerged in the second generation. In the

Police find remains of missing 13-year-old girl

SNYDER, Texas (AP) ? Remains found in a remote West Texas location last month are those of a 13-year-old middle school cheerleader missing since December 2010, authorities announced Friday.

Hailey Darlene Dunn's remains were found near Lake J.B. Thomas in Scurry County on March 16, more than two years after her mother reported her missing.

The girl's disappearance and the cause of her death remain under investigation, Scurry County Sheriff Trey Wilson said at a news conference Friday. The Scurry County District Attorney's Office received written confirmation of the identity of the remains on Friday, he said.

Texas Rangers informed the girl's mother, Billie Jean Dunn, on Friday afternoon at her Austin home, said her attorney, John Young. Dunn will be driving to West Texas to arrange her daughter's funeral, he said.

The body was found about 20 miles northwest of the girl's hometown of Colorado City. The girl had been the subject of months of intensive searches in and around Colorado City and surrounding fields and landfills after her mother reported her missing on Dec. 28, 2010. More than 100 billboards featuring her picture and information about the case were set up along interstates in Texas and other states.

The mother's boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, has said he last saw Hailey a day before she was reported missing. He said the girl told him she was going to her father's home nearby and then on to spend the night at a friend's home. She did neither.

Authorities had named Adkins as a person of interest in the girl's disappearance, but he was never charged. At one point, authorities accused the girl's mother of lying about the whereabouts of Adkins, who was found at her home. Billie Dunn pleaded no contest in June 2011 to making a false report to law enforcement and received a suspended 90-day jail term with probation.

The mother and Adkins have denied involvement in Hailey's disappearance.

Hailey's paternal grandfather, Bill Dunn, died in 2011, six months after the girl went missing. His widow, Spicy Dunn of Ponca City, Okla., said her husband spent much of the last months of his life trying to learn what became of his granddaughter.

"He was very, very hurt, and was on the computer all the time looking and trying to find anything that had to do with Hailey," she said Friday. "Anything."

She said family members made a point not to change their phone numbers so that law enforcement officials could reach them in case of any developments, even years later.

"It is a relief to know that she's at peace," Spicy Dunn said. "She doesn't have any more suffering."

She later added, "I hope the family comes to a closure. I know it's very hard."

Bird navigation: Great balls of iron

Apr. 25, 2013 ? Every year millions of birds make heroic journeys guided by Earth's magnetic field. How they detect magnetic fields has puzzled scientists for decades. Today, the Keays lab at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology in Vienna has added some important pieces to this puzzle.

Their work, published in Current Biology, reports the discovery of iron balls in sensory neurons. These cells, called hair cells, are found in the ear and are responsible for detecting sound and gravity. Remarkably, each cell has just one iron ball, and it is in the same place in every cell. "It's very exciting. We find these iron balls in every bird, whether it's a pigeon or an ostrich" adds Mattias Lauwers who discovered them "but not in humans." It is an astonishing finding, despite decades of research these conspicuous balls of iron had not been discovered.

This finding builds on previous work by the lab of David Keays who last year showed that iron-rich cells in the beak of pigeons that were believed to be the magnetic sensors, were really just blood cells. "These cells are much better candidates, because they're definitely neurons. But we're a long way off to understanding how magnetic sensing works -- we still don't know what these mysterious iron balls are doing." said Dr Keays. "Who knows, perhaps they are the elusive magnetoreceptors" muses Dr Keays "only time will tell."

Boston bombing suspect moved to prison facility

    >> following that breaking news tied to the boston marathon attack.

    >> that's right, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev has now been confined at the bureau of prison federal medical center at ft. devins after being moved overnight.

    >> we go right to nbc's jeff rossen for more and the suspect's plans for an alleged attack in times square .

    >> reporter: good morning, we begin with breaking news, there have been outcries because dzhokhar tsarnaev had been treated at beth israel medical center the same exact hospital where many victims were treated. earlier this morning he was transported to this federal prison at fort devens , massachusetts, 40 miles outside of boston to the west. it is a specialized facility that treats inmates with long-term medical needs and also on a decommissioned military base. the u.s. marshal service confirmed the move overnight. let's get you up to date on the latest plan to attack times square . this was not a well planned attack thought out for months. instead the suspects came up with this on the fly last thursday and we're going to drive here to times square that night with six new bombs. officials now say if not for this shoot-out last week with watertown police, tamerlan and dzhokhar tsarnaev may have gone through with it. they just carjacked this mercedes suv. overnight the carjacking victim, a chinese entrepreneur providing new details to "the boston globe ." "don't look at me he says tamerlan yelled at him. later tamer lane says okay you're chinese, i'm a muslim. chinese are friendly to muslims. the victim responded we are so friendly to muslims. the victim was able to get away but during that ride the brothers hatched the new plan, drive to new york 's times square and set off their remaining explosives.

    >> one was a pressure cooker bomb similar to the two that had exploded at the marathon. the other five were pipe bombs .

    >> reporter: dzhokhar was in times square at least once last year posing with friends in this photo. luckily he didn't make it back this time.

    >> they had built these additional explosives and we know they had the capacity to carry out the attacks.

    >> reporter: new york city officials have high tech surveillance cameras to prevent these kinds of attacks. the nypd showed us how they can flag an abandoned package before it explodes. it gives you an image and circles the package.

    >> it shows us exactly where the package was left.

    >> reporter: back in boston we're learning new details about dzhokhar's bedside court appearance. source familiar with the hearing says he showed no reaction when the prosecutor explained he could face the death penalty. meanwhile his mother in russia is still defending her boys, seen here in a family photo apparently taken in 2007 .

    >> i thought america was going to protect us, our kids, it's going to be safe. america took my kids away from me.

    >> reporter: a live picture of times square . it is important to note that there is no credible threat to new york , but new york mayor michael bloomberg made a point in his news conference yesterday saying this plan is proof that new york city remains a prime target for terrorists. once again, savannah, to recap the breaking news overnight, dzhokhar tsarnaev, the younger suspect, the surviving suspect, moved from beth israel medical center in boston to a federal prison 40 miles west of boston where he will remain.

Created in 2002 as part of a Brand Extension that transformed the blue and red brands into two distinct entities, the WWE Draft became a yearly tradition two years later, granting?Raw and?SmackDown General Managers the opportunity to reshape their rosters. The annual event, as Mr. McMahon put it, was a recurrent opportunity to ?shake things up again.?

And boy, did things get shaken up. From stunning defections to catalysts for chaos, the WWE Draft altered the sports-entertainment landscape on multiple occasions. But which draft picks dropped the most jaws? Here are the five biggest WWE Draft shockers.

?Stoopid Tall? bike is over 14 feet tall

MADRID, April 25 (Reuters) - Playmaker Andres Iniesta has dismissed the idea Barcelona are at the end of an era following their 4-0 Champions League mauling by Bayern Munich. Barca, who lifted the trophy in 2009 and 2011, were the favourites to win the competition ahead of Tuesday's semi-final first leg but they were so outclassed by the Germans that many pundits believe their recent spell of dominance is over. "I think it is unfair to talk of a cyclical change," the Spanish World Cup winner told a news conference on Thursday. ...

Bugatti to produce eight "World Record Car" special editions - Gizmag

Bugatti has introduced the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Car limited edition. That's an awful mouthful for the name of a car ? 254 mph (408.84 km/h) tells the story much more concisely, as does "world's fastest convertible." Just eight lucky multimillionaires will get to drive home in one of their very own.

Now that all the world record melee is over (for the time being), Bugatti can get back to what Bugatti does best ? launching marginally altered versions of the Veyron at major auto shows around the world. Bugatti carefully planned a China-focused debut for the world's fastest convertible, inviting Chinese entrepreneur and car enthusiast Anthony Liu to drive the car into the T?V-certified record books just prior to premiering the car at China's largest auto show.

"China is one of the most important markets in Bugatti?s strategy for the future and we are aiming for a growth here that will be stable and sustainable," explained Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, Bugatti's president.

The Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Car receives no power increase or suspension tuning, relying on the Vitesse's plenty-potent 1,183-hp quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16, racing chassis and carbon monocoque. After having its Veyron Super Sport world record thrown into question, Bugatti was mindful to note that the Vitesse used in the world record run had no modified technology.

The separation between the Vitesse and World Record Car edition is entirely superficial, therefore, consisting of an Arancia orange on visible black carbon motif. The orange can be seen on key parts of the exterior, including the front wings, rims, grille surround and rear wing underside.

Not surprisingly, the Arancia-splashed black theme continues into the cockpit, where orange stitching permeates a largely black design with orange leather on the seats. The visible carbon also finds its way inside, dressing the top of the steering wheel, door inserts, center console extension, iPad console edging, belt outlet trims on the seats and EB logo in the leather back panel.

Bugatti will sell each WRC model for ?1.99 million (approx. US$2.6 million) plus tax. According to Autoweek, all eight are spoken for.

Small Business Finance SaaS Provider Wave Launches Payroll App ...

Toronto-based Wave, the online finance software startup that has built a growing business around a freemium model of cloud-based accounting, is launching its new iOS payroll application today. The tool is a companion to the company?s web-based payroll platform, adding a much-needed mobile element to the overall product suite and building on the recent launch of the receipt scanner applications the company debuted earlier this month.

The iOS payroll app is designed to help SMB owners to run their entire payroll process from their iPhones, without having to jump on?the?desktop to do things like view a payroll history, run a new cycle, pay stubs and receive notifications to remind them of tasks that need completion. Notifications can be set for employees, too, to alert you exactly them a payment has been received. The app is debuting on Android, but CEO Kirk Simpson told me that the company is working on an Android version, too, with the intention of releasing that later this year.

The mobile app has been one of the top requests from Wave?s 600,000 current subscribers, and adds to Wave?s?continuing?efforts to build out that part of its business. Its freemium model appears to be working well so far, with the basic accounting tools available to all via an ad-supported revenue model, and additional tools, including the payroll suite, available on volume-based pricing. Moving mobile, which is a huge area of potential growth for SaaS-based offerings, si a good way for Wave to keep up with new players and stay ahead of legacy offerings.

Microsoft to reveal next-generation Xbox on May 21

    By Malathi Nayak

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp will unveil its much-anticipated next-generation Xbox on May 21 following months of speculation the company is gearing up to announce a new video game console this summer.

The company sent out media invitations on Wednesday, hinting it would be announcing the successor to its seven-year old Xbox 360. A new console from the software company will come on the heels of rival Sony's announcement in February that it will launch the PlayStation4 this holiday season.

Microsoft's May event will be held at its Xbox campus in Redmond, Washington, just a month before the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, the gaming industry's largest annual convention, where next-generation consoles will be spotlighted.

"On May 21, we'll mark the beginning of a new generation of games, TV and entertainment," the company said on its official blog.

The Xbox 360 is the market-leading console that has an installed user base of 76 million. Gaming blogs have been afire with speculation about what features a next-generation console might offer, but Microsoft has been tight-lipped so far.

The current version of the Xbox sports voice- and gesture-command capabilities.

Shares in Microsoft were up 3.1 percent at $31.53 in the afternoon.

Texas town holds no grudge against exploded fertilizer plant owner

By Colleen Jenkins and Tim Gaynor

WEST, Texas (Reuters) - When Texas farmer Donald Adair bought the floundering West Fertilizer Co in 2004, his neighbors in the rolling countryside near West were grateful he had saved them from driving extra miles to Waco or Hillsboro to buy fertilizer, feed and tools.

After the plant exploded last week, flattening homes, damaging schools, killing 14 people and leaving some 200 others with injuries including burns, lacerations and broken bones, they still described the 83-year-old owner as honest and good.

"I like him very well, he's helped me out," said William Supak, a retired farmer who lives a few hundred yards (meters) from a farm house owned by the Adairs, and recalled a time when his neighbor helped save his hay by putting out a fire.

As he paused from mowing the grass in front of his house, Supak said the disaster in West did not change his view of Adair, whom he said he sometimes sees using a powered wheel chair to fetch his mail.

"I don't see him very often, but I understand that he's not in too good a health, said Supak.

Another neighbor of Adair, who asked not to be identified, described him as a "good guy."

"It's a farming community, everybody knows him. Like I said, it happened, and (to blame him) don't make good sense."

Five days after the explosion, school reopened on Monday and grieving families planned funerals for the paramedics and firefighters who died trying to fight the blaze.

Investigators said they still had not determined the cause of the explosion, and the people who lived closest to the plant had not yet been allowed to return to their homes.

Adair has stayed out of the public eye, saying nothing since the statement he issued on Friday in which he vowed to cooperate with the investigation. A spokesman for Adair said he had been at the West Church of Christ, where he is an elder, on Wednesday night when he learned of the fire and drove to the scene to urge people to move to safety.

"As a lifelong resident, my heart is broken with grief for the tragic losses to so many families in our community," Adair said in the statement. "The selfless sacrifice of first responders who died trying to protect all of us is something I will never get over."

Adair lives about five miles from West in a neat, white two-story house set back from the road down a gravel driveway marked by a green John Deere mailbox. The house is surrounded by farm buildings and equipment, and has a basketball hoop.

A Reuters reporter went to knock on the door as a silver Lincoln sedan rolled slowly down the drive and pulled up. A silver-haired woman with curls, matching one neighbor's description of Adair's wife Wanda, said: "Leave this property now," pausing to add, "Please."

Six of Adair's seven children also live in the West area. Daughter Diane, a nurse, helped provide triage to injured residents after the blast, said Daniel Keeney, a crisis communications expert who is speaking on behalf of Adair.

Most of the dozen residents interviewed by Reuters, including farmers, church members and local business owners who know Donald Adair, did not fault him for operating the plant so close to a residential area or for storing large quantities of the hazardous materials ammonium nitrate and anhydrous ammonia.

The privately held fertilizer plant has been in operation since 1962, long before the homes and nearby schools were built, and the fertilizer was needed by farmers, they said.

"They provided a huge service to this area," said Mimi Irwin, owner of the Village Bakery, which sells kolache pastries in downtown West and hails itself as the first all-Czech bakery in Texas. "People are just sick about it."

Irwin said the Adair family is generous in donating to community events, such as church bazaars and sports tournaments.

"They're always one of the names in the newspaper as one of the givers," she said. "They've been good citizens of this community."

Donald Adair is a lifelong farmer who also spent about 30 years working at General Tire and Rubber Company in Waco, said Donald Cernosek, who worked with Adair as mill operators until the plant closed in the late 1980s.

"He's kind of quiet, but he's always joking about something," said Cernosek, now an insurance agent in West who was busy on Monday handling claims for victims of the blast.

West Fertilizer Co was in financial distress when Adair bought it nine years ago and farmers worried about losing a local resource for the supplies needed to grow corn, wheat and milo, several people said. Plant employees mixed fertilizers for farmers based on tests of their soil samples.

The fertilizer facility had an appraised market value of $908,400 when he bought it in 2004, according to McLennan County property tax records. By last year, its appraised value had fallen to $723,771, although it was not clear why.

The stable of Adair family businesses also includes Adair Grain, which is the parent company of West Fertilizer, and Adair Farms. Adair owns some 5,000 acres of cropland and grassland in the area, Keeney said, which according to local tax records would be worth several million dollars at market prices.

    MANAGEMENT LEFT TO OTHERS

Adair left the day-to-day operations at West Fertilizer to the plant's 13 employees, including general manager Ted Uptmore Sr., who has been employed by the company for 50 years, Keeney and others said.

Uptmore ran the fertilizer part of the company, while Andrew "Rusty" Kwast, Adair's son-in-law, ran the grain side, Keeney said. Adair continued to work his farm, the spokesman said.

The Adair family have been among the biggest recipients in the area of farm subsidy payments from the federal government. Donald Adair received $874,522 during the period 1995 to 2011 and his son Gary received more than $1.2 million in subsidies during the period, according to a database of U.S. government data compiled by the Environmental Working Group.

Adair's neighbors said West Fertilizer did brisk business at this time of year from farmers from a wide radius around West, selling dry fertilizer or tanks of anhydrous ammonia.

Local residents also said they knew that handling fertilizer was a potentially dangerous business.

West Fertilizer disclosed to a Texas state agency that, as of the end of 2012, the company was storing 270 tons of ammonium nitrate, mixed with other compounds to produce a dry fertilizer. The same type of solid fertilizer was mixed with fuel and used by Timothy McVeigh to raze the Oklahoma City federal building in 1995, killing 168 people.

West Fertilizer had been fined occasionally for regulatory violations since Adair bought it, but a Texas state environmental official described its safety record as "average."

A search of federal and state legal records did not turn up any lawsuits against Adair personally or any of his companies.

Cernosek, the local insurance agent, was quick to defend Adair's reputation even though his home 500 yards from the plant is likely a total loss.

"Hell no," he said when asked if he held Adair responsible for what happened at the plant. "I in no way will ever file a lawsuit due to any of this."

But the lack of lawsuits may soon change. A Dallas law firm Baron & Budd, which was involved in BP oil spill litigation, has set up a toll free number for victims of the West explosion to contact them about possible legal challenges.

Some residents still had unanswered questions in the difficult, soul-searching days after the blast, among them Emily Polansky, who lives about half a mile from the plant and had her windows smashed when it blew. Walking with the aid of a cane, she puzzled over how the fire took hold after workers had left the plant and wondered about supervision.

"I feel maybe there was a lack of supervision possibly on the management's part with employees working there ... maybe there weren't safety precautions taken for dealing with anhydrous ammonia and (ammonium) nitrate," Polansky, a farmer's wife who is well-versed in fertilizers, told Reuters at the hotel where she is staying while she is kept out of her damaged home.

But resident Chuck Smith, who helped neighbors leave their homes amid the dark smoke and acrid fumes after the blast, was not prepared to point a finger at the Adairs.

"When all is said and done, they call them accidents for a reason. I mean the people that work there, the people that own that place, that go there ... all of them were raised here, have kids here, have family here," he said. "There was no malicious intent. There was no trying to skimp."
