Mechanism of lung cancer-associated mutations suggests new therapeutic approaches

ScienceDaily (July 30, 2012) ? Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center researchers have identified how one of the genes most commonly mutated in lung cancer may promote such tumors.

The investigators found that the protein encoded by this gene, called EPHA3, normally inhibits tumor formation, and that loss or mutation of the gene -- as often happens in lung cancer -- diminishes this tumor-suppressive effect, potentially sparking the formation of lung cancer. The findings, published July 24 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, could offer direction for personalizing cancer treatments and development of new therapies.

The ephrin family of receptors (EPH receptors) comprises a large group of cell surface proteins that regulate cell-to-cell communication in normal development and disease. EPH receptor mutations have been linked to several different cancer types.

Jin Chen, M.D., Ph.D., professor of Medicine, Cancer Biology and Cell & Developmental Biology, studies the cancer-associated roles of these receptors. While her lab has focused primarily on EPHA2 (and its role in promoting breast cancer and tumor blood vessel formation), she decided to look at a different ephrin receptor based on the findings of large genomic screens of lung tumors.

"A 2008 genome-wide study published in Nature identified 26 genes as potential drivers of lung cancer," Chen said. "One of them was EPHA3."

That study and others suggested that mutations in EPHA3 were present in 5 percent to 10 percent of lung adenocarcinomas. However, the studies did not reveal how these mutations might promote tumor formation or progression.

Chen wanted to investigate further whether mutations in EPHA3 were actually "drivers" of lung cancer or just neutral "passenger" mutations and how the mutations might promote tumor growth.

The researchers generated and analyzed 15 different mutations in the receptor. They found that at least two functioned as "dominant negative" inhibitors of the EPHA3 protein -- that is, having a mutation in just one allele (or "copy" -- humans have two copies of each gene) was enough to inhibit the function of EPHA3.

Chen and colleagues determined that normal or "wild type" EPHA3 inhibits a downstream signaling pathway (the Akt pathway) that promotes cell survival -- so, normally, activation of EPHA3 acts as a "brake" on cell growth and survival and induces programmed cell death (apoptosis). When one EPHA3 allele is lost (due to a mutation), the receptor cannot be activated and the Akt pathway remains active, which promotes cell growth and survival.

To determine the impact of EPHA3 mutations on human lung cancer cases, biostatisticians Yu Shyr, Ph.D., and Fei Ye, Ph.D., helped Chen's group identify a mutational signature from existing patient data that strongly correlated with poor patient survival. The team also found that both gene and protein levels of EPHA3 were decreased in patient lung tumors.

While previous studies had linked EPHA3 mutations to lung cancer, the current study is the first to "connect the dots."

"The EPH family is such a big family that nobody had really connected the data from bench top -- from the cell and biochemical studies -- to human data," Chen said.

Together, the findings suggest that mutations in EPHA3 may be important drivers of a significant fraction of lung cancers. And the research team's identification of the biochemical and cellular consequences of EPHA3 mutations suggests that therapies that target a downstream pathway (such as Akt) might be beneficial for tumors with mutant EPHA3.

Ways to Improve Energy Efficiency

While it is possible to improve a home's energy efficiency in any climate, the predominant weather in an area has an impact on which efficiency measures will be the most valuable. For example, in especially cold areas such as Juneau or especially hot areas such as Phoenix replacement windows can cause a marked change in the cost of heating or cooling a house, whereas the impact of new windows in a more moderate climate will be less.

Any time you set out to improve your home's energy efficiency there are three dynamics to keep in mind. First, generating energy at your home from a clean source is far more efficient. Second, lighting your home more efficiently cuts down on energy consumption. Third, heating and cooling your home more efficiently is often the single most important area of overall efficiency.

The climate that you live in will, to a great degree, dictate your ability to generate power on your property. Those who live in a rainy climate, for example, won't benefit from solar panels the way that those who live in a sunny climate will. And it's pointless to install a windmill where there isn't any wind. But if you can generate power it's a good idea to do so: energy burns off in wires, so the shorter the distance is between production and plug the better.

One exception is a geothermal well, which generates power based on the exchange of heat between one end of a rod that is sunk deep into the ground and the other end of the rod, which is exposed. The temperature below the ground is fifty-six degrees Fahrenheit all the time, so any time the temperature above the ground is different (higher or lower) a geothermal well can generate electricity.

But producing power is only one way to increase efficiency. Reducing your home's consumption of power is just as important, and one of the most significant consumers of power is lighting. This can be changed by switching high efficiency light bulbs for the standard ones or by correcting bad habits. Simply turning the lights off when you leave a room can save a lot of electricity and substantially improve efficiency.

Beyond these simple fixes, it is possible to improve the way you light your home by making better use of natural light. In older homes that tend to have smaller windows, you can make a significant change by increasing the size and quantity of those windows. Even without structural changes, using mirrors to reflect (and reuse) natural light can greatly reduce your reliance on artificial lights powered by electricity.

Most people spend the most money on heating and cooling their homes, which means that heating and cooling use the most power. This can be mitigated by installing newer, more efficient equipment, as well as by improving the insulation of your home to bring it up to today's construction standards. The better insulated a home is, the less affected it is by the temperature outside.

In addition to re-insulating the home, replacing windows can demonstrably improve efficiency. The value of new windows has been well enough established that in hot places like Los Angeles and Phoenix replacement windows qualify for rebates from most utilities. Replacing the windows creates a good (and often subsidized) opportunity to expand the size of windows wherever possible, increasing the amount of natural light available inside the home.

Biden: GOP Considers Teachers Selfish

DETROIT -- Vice President Joe Biden told a gathering of more than 3,000 teachers on Sunday that Mitt Romney and fellow Republicans think that teachers are selfish.

"They characterize you as only caring about yourself," Biden said at the American Federation of Teachers conference. "But the fact of the matter is, I don't think they know you. I don't think [Romney] knows you."

The AFT speech was Biden's latest address to a national union -- he earlier spoke to the national police union in Florida and the national firefighters union in Pennsylvania as well as the National Education Association, the other large teachers' union.

In each of those previous speeches, he used similar language to make the case that Democrats are far more attuned to the needs and concerns of the unions' constituencies.

The vice president suggested that Romney doesn't understand the sacrifices teachers make in their personal lives for the betterment of their students when considering the demands teacher unions make for higher wages and better benefits.

"How many other people have to do a difficult job and have to deal with that child from a broken home whose mother or father just got arrested?" Biden said to resounding applause. "How many of you have to do that every single day, and so much more?"

Do Fad Diets Help You To Lose Weight | Lose Weight Without ...

?

If you want to lose weight fast, you may be tempted to look for a weight loss miracle cure ? a fast, easy diet that melts fat like snow off a roof top in the first days of spring.

A fad diet seems to be the answer. ?Fad diets? are the popular diets that hit the newspapers and that every second celebrity seems to be on. They?re fashionable while the trend lasts, often for a year or two. Then they fade away, when the next big fad diet hits.

Fad diets often focus on a single food ? ?The Hard-Boiled Egg Diet?, or ?The Watermelon Diet?, or several foods, like ?The Israeli Army Diet?. The Israeli Army Diet was a classic, simple fad diet which lasted four days. The first day you ate apples, the second cheese, the third day you ate only chicken and the fourth day you ate only salad.

Other fad diets demonize certain food groups, like carbohydrates.

Yes, you?ll lose weight fast with one of these diets, but they?re dangerous and unhealthy. You can?t keep them up forever. They also have a rebound effect ? you always seem to put on more weight after a fad diet, so you end up with more weight to lose than you did before.

How Do You Know Whether Your Diet Is A Fad Diet?

Here are clues to look for:

* The diet bans certain foods or severely restricts them;

* There?s a food list of foods that you must include in your diet;

* A diet suddenly seems hugely popular;

* The diet promises huge weight loss ? ?a pound a day?;

* Newspaper articles are critical of the diet.

Your Doctor Knows Best

If you?re looking for a way to lose weight fast, go to your doctor first, and have a complete checkup. There may be medical reasons you?re overweight. Ask your doctor?s advice on a healthy weight loss diet for you.

You can lose weight, but you want your weight loss to be enjoyable, and permanent. A good, healthy diet not only helps you to lose weight fast, but it also teaches you how to eat for health and vitality. Skip fad diets. You don?t need them.

B.J. Penn, Invicta FC and Rousimar Palhares: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.28.12

Other than the announcement from Cesar Gracie that Nick Diaz would like to fight Fedor Emelianenko (or something like that), it seems the Olympics are garnering all the attention, with Quidditch and Battle Royale among today's events (go District 6!? Wahoo!).? But there is some solid MMA news out there, hidden among the headlines and blurbs,?and because I like you, I went through the trouble of gathering it?in one place for you to read.? You're welcome.

    • B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald have signed up for the more stringent Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) testing ahead of their UFC 152 meeting.? Remember: athletic commissions already screen fighters for banned substances, so what Penn and MacDonald?are doing goes above and beyond what's required.? Bravo, guys.

Penn has been one of the more vocal voices when fighters have failed tests, always insisting his brand of fighting is 100 percent natural.? On September 22 he and MacDonald will be totally clean, confirmed by the VADA.

    ?

    • The Invicta Fighting Championships weigh-ins were last night, and?everything is?a?"go" for the all-female MMA card tonight?(broadcast for free on their site).? If you tune in, keep an eye on the main event, which features veteran submission specialist Shayna Baszler (who trains under Josh Barnett and once won a bout with a Twister, which is cool beans) taking on undefeated rising star Sara McMann (who won the Silver Medal in Freestyle wrestling in the 2004 Summer Olympics).? Because of her credentials, comparisons have been made between McMann and Strikeforce champ Ronda Rousey - who took the Bronze Medal in judo in the 2008 Summer Olympics - but I say McMann needs a bit more seasoning.? Watch and judge for yourself, though.? I mean, who the heck am I?

    ?

    • Rousimar Palhares, a.k.a. "Toquinho", a.k.a. "that crazy guy who tears off legs and?will someday go?bonkers in the Octagon and have a psychotic break", won't require surgery for that knee injury that forced him out of his UFC 150 bout against Yushin Okami.? Tatame was kind enough to write something in English about it, so props to them.?

    ?

That's it for now.? If the stream is solid enough, I will be watching tonight's Invicta FC and tweeting about what I see.? Follow or don't.? It doesn't matter to me.? I'm used to talking to myself.

Will You Owe a Tax Penalty Under the Affordable Care Act? | You ...

by Shawanda Greene on July 27, 2012

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or e-mail. Thanks for visiting!

I am SO tired of hearing that President Obama is secretly Beelzebub?s half-Asian, younger brother and that Mitt Romney?s sideburns aren?t real.

It?s sickening! Enough with the pointless distractions.

Real issues haunt the United States:

    • The stubbornly high unemployment rate
    • The staggering national debt
    • The ridiculously expensive health care system

Since our elected leaders have done little to address the first two items, we?ll focus on the last one?health care.

Americans on the far right, the far left, and Ron Paul all have strong opinions?(I?m sure you do too)?about what increased government involvement in health care means for the nation.

But can we cast our beliefs aside and focus on the facts?

You see, the facts are absolute. We can?t argue about verifiable truths. (Geez, I hope I?m right.)

Recently, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Affordable Care Act is?like it or not?constitutional. Thus, the most contentious element of the law, the individual mandate, lives on.

Here on You Have More Than You Think, we like to talk about money. So I want to show you how the Affordable Care Act will affect your wallet?by referring you to an organization that?s done all of the hard work for me.

Walk through the easy-to-follow infographic provided by the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Then, you?ll be in a better position to answer the question, ?What happens if I?fail to buy health insurance?? ?How much of a tax?no a penalty?no a tax-penalty will I owe??

    Woooow. Lookie. A decision tree.

    This is gonna be fun.

Aleppo short on weapons, medical supplies as Syria's next big battle looms

The expected Syrian government offensive hasn't begun in earnest, but?Aleppo's rebel-held neighborhoods are being pounded by shelling and gunfire and clinics are filling up with wounded.

    By Scott Peterson,?Staff writer / July 27, 2012

Rebel fighters of the Free Syrian Army control districts of Aleppo, Syria, on July 27. Aleppo has become a critical battleground in the 16-month uprising against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, which has claimed an estimated 17,000 lives.

Shortly afterwards, another man ? a plumber shot in the leg by a Syrian government sniper ??was brought in.?

Tensions are high in Aleppo, Syria?s second city, where rebel commanders are expecting at any moment a powerful government offensive to reverse the past week's rebel gains, as happened in Damascus, where regime forces reclaimed the capital from the rebels with?firepower and lethal street battles.

The battle for control of Syria?s northern economic hub and largest city will likely shape the fate of the 17-month uprising against President Bashar al-Assad, which has so far consumed 17,000 lives, according to some of the highest estimates. Losing Aleppo to the rebels would demonstrate severe government weakness.

Eighty Syrian government tanks are believed to have arrived at the Aleppo battlefront on the western flanks of the city. Today helicopters circling overhead fired repeated bursts into rebel-held districts for most of the day, causing six deaths.?Government snipers claimed two more lives today, according to rebels in Aleppo.?

?The FSA is ready ? we have many explosives and roadside bombs,? says Abu Mhio, an FSA officer in one Aleppo district. Tanks already deployed in Aleppo have not been used, he says ? only artillery, from a distance ? but their use is "only a matter of time, we don't know when."?

?The regime can?t enter here. The FSA is very strong and everyone supports the FSA,? says Abu Mhio about rebel-held districts east and west/southwest of the city center. ?People open their houses to us.?

It is not possible to verify rebel claims of broad support in Aleppo. Yet one woman cradling a baby on her shoulder stepped into an FSA office today, specifically to ask for an FSA flag ? to use as a backdrop for a portrait of the child, she said, and to hang at home.

Today and all week, families raced to fill trucks with belongings, hoisting refrigerators, televisions and anything that would fit before fleeing to safer villages in northern Syria or across the border to Turkey. Looks of fear marked their faces as they continually scanned the sky to check the location of the shooting helicopters.?

Aleppo has been a challenge for rebel forces. It was late to join the uprising, has long supported the regime, and its neighborhoods are split between opposition and government supporters. But the expected showdown between rebel and regime forces has also brought a fresh influx of rebels into the city.?

?Every day some more fighters come from the villages? we just want to defend these places [in Aleppo], so let God bless us,? says a fighter and former government special forces soldier, who asked to be called Abu Omar. ?The regime does a lot of shelling at night to make people afraid, to destroy buildings and kill more people ? to make people curse the FSA... they say: ?You come here, and now the bombs come? ??so we try to protect people. But we need weapons, more weapons, from any country.?

Another fighter, Abu Hamza, brandishes his AK-47 assault rifle to make the point: ?This gun costs $2,000, and every bullet is $2,? he says. ?It?s so expensive.?

In reversal, GOP puts Obama on defense for a bit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Relentless GOP criticism of a 12-day-old remark about business owners has taken a campaign toll on President Barack Obama, forcing him to defend himself and giving Republican Mitt Romney a break from steady attacks.

The development has delighted Republicans, who were eager to shift the campaign focus from Romney's tax returns, overseas assets and Bain Capital record.

Acknowledging that the Republican's criticisms were hitting a mark, Obama's team rolled out two new TV ads this week in which he employed for the first time what many Democrats consider a powerful tool: the president talking directly into the camera and countering GOP claims.

"Those ads taking my words about small business out of context ? they're flat-out wrong," Obama says in the newest ad.

Democrats say the "direct-to-camera" format plays to the president's strength, and they don't think Romney can match it. But like any strategy deployed 15 weeks before Election Day, it might lose some of its impact over time.

In the immediate future, Democrats hope Obama's response will help him move past the flap about business owners. But Romney aides kept up the pressure Wednesday, sponsoring 24 events on the topic while Romney was overseas.

Democratic strategists acknowledged Wednesday that Obama was being hurt, at least a little, by Romney's repeated jabs at comments the president made in Virginia on July 13, which originally drew little notice.

"If you've got a business, you didn't build that," Obama said, in part. "Somebody else made that happen."

Most GOP attacks ignored the broader context of the speech. In it, Obama discussed a favorite theme: the claim that government-assisted infrastructure including roads, research and schools help sustain American society, including private enterprise.

Romney and his allies have used the quote in countless ads, videos, statements and conference calls, painting Obama as contemptuous of hard-working entrepreneurs and business owners.

It's a presidential topic so familiar that few reporters or Obama critics took note of the specific remarks for a few days.

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help," Obama said in the July 13 speech. He cited teachers and mentors who helped "create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges."

"When we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together," he said.

Late on July 16, the Romney campaign began a drumbeat of attacks quoting only the line, "If you've got a business, you didn't build that."

Democrats responded cautiously at first. Eventually, aides began saying Obama's "that" referred to the infrastructure he cited elsewhere in the Virginia speech.

In an interview with a Florida TV station that aired Friday ? a full week after the original remarks ? Obama said: "What I said was, together we build roads and we build bridges...Anybody who actually watched the tape knows that was what I was referring to."

Obama had planned to address the matter more fully on Friday, aides say. But that day's mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater sidelined both campaigns for several days.

Still, Obama and his advisers realized the attacks were starting to hurt, and they filmed the 30-second response ad in the White House chief of staff's office on Saturday. In the ad, first aired Tuesday, Obama says: "Those ads taking my words about small business out of context ? they're flat-out wrong. Of course Americans build their own businesses."

Obama also began to push back in his stump speech.

"Over the next four months, you are going to hear a lot of stuff," he said at a New Orleans fundraiser Wednesday evening. "Sometimes they will play around with things I say. They'll take out whole sentences. They've got an ad right now where they just spliced it and diced it and make it seem like I don't appreciate the incredible work of small businesspeople."

Romney and the Republican National Committee have since urged voters to review the entire speech. Their criticisms of Obama are fair and in context, they say.

Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod, referring to the first Romney ads about the "you didn't build that" quote, told MSNBC on Wednesday: "I was concerned when I saw the initial ad that it might be impactful. I've concluded that it's not all that impactful. But the ad that we did in response got a very good response in the testing that we did, because it pushes our message forward."

A Democratic strategist with ties to the campaign said Obama's team used focus groups, Web studies and other techniques to gauge the likely impact of Romney's attacks. No Obama campaign ads are aired without undergoing intense study, said the strategist, who would speak only on background in order to discuss private meetings.

Campaigns often use an opponent's remarks selectively, and then weather charges of taking the comments out of context. In January, some Democrats pounced when Romney told an audience, "I like being able to fire people." GOP aides said it was clear that Romney was referring to the right to seek the best providers of services such as insurance.

Romney campaign spokesman Kevin Madden said Wednesday that Obama's July 13 speech "crystalizes the differences" between the two candidates on how large and active the federal government should be. The lesson of the Republicans' 2010 election victories, he said, is that "Washington has to stop growing the size of government."

Obama aides said it's largely coincidental that his new 30-second ad looks much like a 60-second ad that was recorded some time ago but first aired Monday. Both were filmed in the White House chief of staff's office, and consist of the president speaking directly to viewers.

The 60-second ad, titled "The Choice," contains none of the defensiveness of the shorter one. It pursues the Obama campaign's oft-stated goal of framing the election as a choice between two visions of America more than as referendum on Obama's first term, which has been dogged by high unemployment.

"Over the next four months, you have a choice to make," Obama says in the ad. "Gov. Romney's plan would cut taxes for the folks at the very top. Roll back regulations on big banks. And he says that if we do that, our economy will grow and everyone will benefit." That approach has failed in the past, Obama says.

Romney's campaign shows no sign of letting up on the "you didn't build that" attacks. The president's comments made Florida business owner Lou Ramos "almost throw up," the campaign said Wednesday in announcing an event in Tampa featuring Ramos.

The Democratic National Committee responded with conference calls in which elected officials and small business owners denounced the "out-of-context attacks on the president."

Ssh?probiotics at work | Brisbane Personal Trainer - Unique Bodies ...

While the word bacteria may have negative connotations, not all bacteria are harmful. There are many types that are in fact good for us, including probiotics. Probiotics are defined by the World Health Organization as ?Live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts provide a health benefit on the host.?

Microorganisms are tiny living organisms, so small they can only be seen under a microscope. Many different types of microorganism are used as probiotics. Two of the more common ones are the bacteria Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis, which are used to support gastro-intestinal wellbeing.

However, many other types of bacteria and also some yeast such as Saccharomyces boulardii have been used in various probiotic products.

Different probiotics have different benefits. Current research shows that probiotics assist:

    • supporting gastro-intestinal wellbeing
    • improving the immune system
    • treating some types of viral diarrhoea
    • providing beneficial bacteria during a course of antibiotics

The Medical Journal of Australia has reported that some strains of probiotics were effective in reducing antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Antibiotics work by killing disease-causing bacteria. However, while the antibiotics are busy killing disease, they may also destroy some of the helpful bacteria in your intestine in the process, and this can lead to antibiotic?associated diarrhoea. Probiotics may help to restore the balance of helpful bacteria and thus help prevent diarrhoea. If antibiotics are prescribed for you, ask your doctor whether taking probiotics would be helpful.

Scientific understanding of probiotics and their ultimate potential for preventing and treating health conditions is at a relatively early stage. However, research is underway on a number of projects, and we look forward to seeing whether specific probiotics will be helpful for the following:

    • Irritable bowel syndrome
    • Infections of the urinary tract or female genital tract
    • Eczema in children

    Who?s living in my intestines?

The average human intestine contains more than one kilogram of bacteria, and the number of bacterial cells in your intestine outnumber cells in a human by 10 times. And each person has several hundred different species of bacteria in their intestine, some of which are beneficial but some of which could be harmful. Our intestinal bacteria are essential to the correct functioning of our digestive system. Each person has their own individual microbial community, and keeping a balance between the beneficial and harmful microorganisms is a key to maintaining good health.

Factors such as poor diet, stress, aging, alcohol and taking antibiotics can easily upset the delicate balance of beneficial and harmful bacteria in the intestine and lead to poor health.

    How do probiotics help?

There?s still much that we don?t know about the way probiotics work, but intensive research is unlocking more and more of their secrets. In general, taking probiotics means more helpful bacteria in the intestine, thus improving the balance between the helpful and harmful bacteria. Some strains of probiotics may work by suppressing the growth of harmful bacteria, or because they adhere well to the cells lining the intestine, making it more difficult for harmful bacteria to attach to the intestine.
Probiotics also have to withstand acidic conditions in the stomach and bile. But even with the best probiotics, it is usually necessary to take adequate amounts every day to obtain the benefits.

It is also important to read the product label to get the right daily dose. For most probiotics, a daily dose will contain between 10 billion and 40 billion ?colony forming units (CFU)? of probiotic microorganisms.

    The right strain for you

It is well recognised that the benefits of one species or strain of probiotic does not necessarily apply for other species or strains. Even different preparations of the same species and strain can have different outcomes. So it is important to read the product information to ensure that the probiotic you take is designed for your intended purpose.

    How long will they keep?

Probiotics are live microorganisms and how long they remain effective for depends on how they were manufactured and how they are stored. Some probiotic products must be stored in a refrigerator at all times to ensure that they remain viable until their labelled expiry date.
Other probiotics are manufactured by freeze drying, microencapsulation and other methods so that the product can be stored for relatively long periods at room temperature. However, we recommend that once you open the container of your probiotic product, it is best to store it in your refrigerator until it is all consumed.

    Prebiotics v Probiotics

Prebiotics are not the same as probiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients such as inulin, pectin and resistant starch that are often found in fibre rich foods. They selectively stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial microorganisms already in people?s digestive systems and can be thought of as ?food? for probiotic bacteria.
If a product contains both prebiotics and probiotics, it is said to be Synbiotic. This helps to ensure that the probiotics have the best chance to flourish in the intestine.

    Thing to Consider before Investing

    Article by Joey Wehrung

Investing means using money to buy fixed assets. when an investor decides to invest his or her money in gold, he has a reasonable desire to generate returns from that outlay. Fixed assets typically involve company shares, bonds, land and buildings, gold and other metals, factories, machinery, and so on. those assets can generate either a profit or a loss depending upon the market circumstances at the time it was bought and sold.

A savvy investor has to take into account many things prior to investing his or her capital. Commonly an investor will buy the assets when its cost is low and can make profit by selling it at the greater cost, though there are several practices for making money during the decline of an asset?s value.

An investor should always shoot for a higher level of return than his cash can earn from the current market interest rate (found at your local bank), which is thought to be safe and guaranteed. He is taking a risk while investing his money and ought to be justly compensated. An investor, for that reason has to perform a thorough judgment about the prevailing circumstances in the market before making the investment. Depending on the asset these considerations include local and international economic conditions (including political issues), industry specific concerns, a company?s leadership team, and so on. Of course there are many factors that are simply impossible to know, hence, the risk. using technical analysis software is helpful in purhasing stock.

Smart investors will not invest their own money. They will either take a loan from a financial institution, lend expertise in exchange for another investor using his money, or even mortgage a property and use that amount for the investment. Then the goal is to earn more than the interest payment that he has pay on such loans. it has been seen that some successful investors won?t even live in their own home. They will actually rent a home from someone else. The reason is that they find it is much better to invest with the money they get by selling their house. (Though there are tax advantages to owning.) An investor needs to be effective and should make wise decisions in the investment strategy, being creative and always looking for opportunities.

An additional smart approach is to generate the most returns with the least amount of money invested. one of the best ways to do this is by trading in stock options. An option trading software programwill allow you to accelerate cash inflow more so than a common stock purchase is cabable of.

One to thing to remember, it is smart to diversify the investment portfolio. Instead of investing in only one stock or property, it is prudent to have different forms of investments. The justification lies in the unpredictable future troubles in the world economic marketplace. it is uncertain whether an investment will yield income or not. If a single investment is profitable, no worries. But if it loses money than the investor has to suffer it for the whole amount he dedicated to the one asset. in the case of investments in multiple stocks, it is logical that not all of them will suffer losses. in a properly diversified portfolio, if some assets generate negative returns, others will produce profit.

Who Is Hollywood's Most Valuable Movie Star?

If we had asked you a decade ago who the most valuable actor in Hollywood would be in 2012, chances are you wouldn't have said Robert Downey Jr. But nowadays, it's no surprise at all that RDJ has topped Vulture's list of the 100 actors and actresses who deliver the most bang for the buck to movie studios.

    19-what-the-internet-is-doing-to-our-brains-podcast - Michael Hyatt

In this episode, I talk about what the Internet is doing to our brains. I summarize and then respond to an article in the July 2012 issue of Newsweek called ?Tweets, Texts, E-mail and Posts: Is the Onslaught Making Us Crazy??

This Is Your Life Podcast Episode 19

I read the Newsweek article on my vacation while I was offline. I found it very disturbing. Here are some of the highlights:

    Click to Listen

    Episode Outline

    • A few years ago, people were ridiculed for suggesting that the Internet was having a negative impact on our minds. But now the proof is starting to stack up.

?The first good, peer-reviewed research is emerging, and the picture is much gloomier than the trumpet blasts of Web utopians have allowed. The current incarnation of the Internet?portable, social, accelerated, and all-pervasive?may be making us not just dumber or lonelier but more depressed and anxious, prone to obsessive-compulsive and attention-deficit disorders, even outright psychotic. Our digitized minds can scan like those of drug addicts, and normal people are breaking down in sad and seemingly new ways.?

    • The problem is that we are continuously connected. Thanks to smart phones and other technologies, we have almost become cyborgs?creatures that are half human, half machine.
    • Here are some interesting facts from the article:
      • On average, American stare at some type of computer screen for eight hours a day.
      • When President Obama ran for office last time, the iPhone had yet to be launched.
      • Now smart phones outnumber regular ones. More than a third of users get online BEFORE they even get out of bed.
      • The average person, regardless of age, sends or receives about 400 text messages a month?four times the 2007 number.
      • The average teen processes an astounding 3,700 texts a month, double the 2007 figure.
    • Again, quoting from the article,

?Altogether the digital shifts of the last five years call to mind a horse that has sprinted out from underneath its rider, dragging the person who once held the reins. No one is arguing for some kind of Amish future. But the research is now making it clear that the Internet is not ?just? another delivery system. It is creating a whole new mental environment, a digital state of nature where the human mind becomes a spinning instrument panel, and few people will survive unscathed.?

    • New brain scan technology shows that our brains are being rewired. Heavy web users have fundamentally altered prefrontal cortexes. The brains of Internet addicts, it turns out, look like the brains of drug and alcohol addicts. Even worse, Chinese researchers have shown that our grey matter?the part of the brain responsible for processing of speech, memory, motor control, emotion, sensory, and other information?is shrinking or atrophying.
    • Numerous studies show that the more a person hangs out online the worse they are likely to feel. Web use often displaces sleep, exercise, and face-to-face exchanges, all of which can lead to loneliness, a sense of isolation, and depression.

So, as I said, I found this article very disturbing. I think you can see why. Gail and I had several long conversations about this and how we might respond. There are three possible responses:

    1. Withdrawal. You just ?Go Amish,? delete your social media accounts, and swear off the Internet.
    2. Immersion. You shrug your shoulders, give up, and keep marching with the lemmings right over the cliff.
    3. Moderation. You become intentional about your Internet usage, understanding that it?s a double-edged sword.

I don?t think focusing on what you are NOT going to do works very well. On my vacation, I read a very helpful book called, Living into Focus by Arthur Boers, which basically builds on the work of Albert Borgmann, a scholar at the University of Montana who has written extensively on the role of technology in our lives.

Both of these men talk about cultivating specific focal practices. I have written on similar practices under the rubric of disciplines of the heart.

Having reflected on it for a few weeks, I believe you can enjoy the benefits of the Internet while avoiding many of the dangers by practicing five positive disciplines:

    1. The discipline of rest.
    2. The discipline of reflection.
    3. The discipline of reading.

Fatherhood Matters: Camp Akeela - Drop Off Day

Today D started his 24 day stay at Camp Akeela.? Camp Akeela is designed for Asperger's kids and targets help improve their social skills.? I am hopeful this is a wonderful learning opportunity for D.? To learn, have fun, make friends, and lay a foundation to become the best person he can be.? He seemed to be excited for the camp.

As for me, I am excited for him too.? Below that excitement simmers a nervousness for my son.?
My son being on his own for the first time.? How will he cope?? If he gets scared at night who will be there to soothe him?? Who will help him? Will he fit in?? Will he make friends?? Will others make fun of him?? Take advantage of him?? I know I can't protect him forever and D lets me know that every day.? But the Dad in me wants him here, home with me.? Safe from the world.

I know this is a leap for D.?? A leap for me too.? We received a call tonight telling us that D was doing well.? However he did have some moments where he was sad.? He told them he missed his family.? That crushed me.? The funny thing is on the way home from Vermonth all of his siblings expressed how they missed him too.? Even little A.? That touched me too - we recognized a cog in our family circle was missing.

On day 1 of this journey I am hopeful for a change in D in the coming weeks.? I am hopeful for a change in me too - learning to be a Dad of a growing 10 year old boy.? Lets see where this journey of emotions takes us over the next 24 days.? I'll chronicle it daily and will look for support through prayer and my social network community.

    Real Wedding: Vintage England, II

    Kelly??|??July 23

My sister?s ceremony was held at the Richmond-upon-Thames registry office. A small room in a historic house, the ceremony had just 40 guests in attendance. The service is very simple, bridesmaids and groomsmen sit with guests. The bride and groom also sit at the registrar?s desk. During the ceremony the license is signed ?by the best man and maid of honor. After that, the couple and all the guests stand as the wording before the kiss is said. And afterwards, the couple gets showered with confetti as they leave the office. I love, love this tradition!

Post-ceremony we took portraits, some more traditional, some less so (we had to bring some westside style to this shindig).

Tracy & Mark continued with photos while we headed to the reception. I?m absolutely in love with their wedding portrait by the Thames by Kirsten of Beaux Arts. My mom had brought wellies from the US and they just happened to match her wedding dress perfectly. Mark, of course, wore a traditional morning suit.

My sister, like me, opted to go with a short wedding dress. She paired it with a classic birdcage veil and some Badgley Mischka heels. You can see more of the wedding right here on Snippet & Ink!

One family's Olympic odyssey from Norway to London

    Jim Seida / NBC News

Svein Bergheim leads his family through the streets of North London on Monday. They were on their way to Box Hill, about 19 miles south-west of the U.K. capital, to watch the Olympic men's road race event.

    By Jim Seida, NBC News

LONDON -- Even in the chaos that is typical London traffic, it?s easy to spot the Bergheim family. They?re the ones pedaling bicycles adorned with Norwegian flags. Behind each bike is a trailer laden down with everything from a satellite dish, television and portable generator to stacks of reindeer pelts. ??

?My average uphill speed is two to four kilometers (1.2 miles to 2.5 miles) per hour,? says 50-year-old Svein, who?s leading his family on what could only be called an odyssey?so they can cheer their countrymen on in the men?s road race on July 28. Svein?s bike and trailer weighs 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds).

?We went by boat from Norway to Denmark,? Svien?s wife?Elisabeth, 43, told NBCNews.com. ?Then we drove to Esbjerg and took the ferry for?18 hours to Harwich (England).? That?s where Svien and Elisabeth, along with their 13-year-old daughter, Ida, and their 8-year-old son, Magnus, started pedaling toward London. That was four days and more than?90 miles ago.

    Jim Seida / NBC News

An impatient taxi driver forces Elisabeth Bergheim and daughter Ina into the street while laying on the horn.

The Bergheims found themselves in a swell of taxis, motorcycles and double-decker buses as they navigated their way through North London to their hotel. ?It?s very scary,? says Ida, pronounced ?Eeda?. ?Big trucks pass and I get the wind in my face.? Soon after, as Ida spins to keep up with her family as they pass through a yellow then red light, a driver piloting a taxi covered in Great Britain?s colors steps on the gas while standing on the horn in a mock ?I?m going to run you over!? move. Welcome to London.

While this might seem like the adventure of a lifetime to most, it?s pretty standard fare for the Bergheims. They?ve been to several Tour de France races, and Svein and Ida were in Vancouver for the last Winter Olympics. ?He gave me this trip for our 20th anniversary,? says Elisabeth. "But maybe we?ll get divorced when we?re finished.??

    Jim Seida / NBC News

Svein Bergheim stops to check directions to a hotel on his phone. His family's odyssey has taken them more than 500 miles by boat, car, ferry and now bicycle to be part of the Olympic Games.

Their plan is to set up camp near Box Hill, the site of the cycling road race events. They will be hard to miss, what with half-a-dozen Norwegian flags blowing in the wind while they watch live coverage of the event that they?ll be pulling down with their satellite dish and sending to their television. They won?t get to see the event live as it?s sold out and they don?t have tickets.?

    Jim Seida / NBC News

In addition to a generator, satellite dish and television, the Bergheims are traveling with reindeer skins to help keep them warm while camping. Here they're pedaling along a special Olympic lane in North London. The lanes, designed to speed Olympic athletes and officials through London's thick traffic, will be closed even to bicyclists beginning Wednesday.

?It?s a game, it?s for fun!? says Elisabeth, ?It?s (the Olympics) an event for the children and we want them to experience it in a fun way, not with all the security and everything.?

Lit by the sun's rays in Greece, the Olympic torch takes a 70-day, 8,000 mile trip to London for the 2012 summer Games.
