U.S. Blacks More Likely to Die of Colon Cancer Than Whites: Study (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Although colorectal cancer death rates in the United States have fallen across the board over the last 20 years, the dip has been smaller among blacks than whites, a new study indicates.

Specifically, the racial spread in death rate trends appears to be most notable among patients diagnosed with the most advanced stage of the disease, according to the results of an investigation by the American Cancer Society (ACS).

"The widening racial disparity for [advanced]-stage has a disproportionate impact on overall colorectal cancer mortality disparities because [advanced]-stage accounts for approximately 60 percent of the overall black-white mortality disparity," the study authors explained in an ACS news release.

The study team, led by Dr. Anthony Robbins, pointed out that up until 1980, black Americans were actually less likely to die from colorectal cancer overall than whites. Since then, however, the availability of ever-better screening and treatment options has turned that dynamic on its head. The result: by 2007, the rate of death among blacks was 44 percent greater than that among whites.

The reason, the authors suggested, may be that black patients do not seem to be getting screened or treated as often and as aggressively as white patients.

The aim of the current ACS study was to find out how exactly racial differences in plummeting death rates have been playing out with respect to disease progression: namely, early-stage (in which cancer is localized); mid-stage (in which cancer has spread to regional lymph nodes); and late-stage (in which the cancer is made its way throughout the patient's body).

To explore that question, the team analyzed two decades of information that had already been gathered by the U.S. National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program database.

The review, released online Dec. 19 in advance of print publication in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, revealed that while racial differences in death rate declines were apparent at every stage of disease, the divide was most stark among late-stage patients.

For example, while early-stage white patients experienced a roughly 30 percent drop in death rates over the last 20 years, their black peers experienced about a 13 percent decline. Among mid-stage patients, the drop was almost 49 percent among whites versus 34 percent among blacks.

But for those with the most advanced stage of disease, the gap was even greater: death rates had dropped by nearly 33 percent among whites compared with just under 5 percent among blacks, the investigators found.

The authors noted that black Americans tend to be screened less often, are less likely to have timely follow-ups when they are screened, and are generally less well informed when it comes to the latest and best treatment options. The researchers suggested that to rectify the problem, an effort should be made to bump up early-stage detection of colorectal cancer among black patients.

Chavez muses on 'US cancer plot'

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has questioned the rash of cancer cases among Latin American leaders and asked if somehow the US might have a way to induce the illness.

Mr Chavez has long wondered whether the US government could be plotting to oust him, but his latest remarks went far beyond any such theories.

The leftist leader referred to the cancer diagnosis of Argentine president Cristina Fernandez, and noted that he and the leaders of Brazil and Paraguay have also struggled with the illness recently.

Mr Chavez called it very strange. He said he is not accusing the US and does not have any proof.

But he asked: "Would it be strange if they had developed a technology to induce cancer and no one knew it?"

Bon Jovi Death Hoax Started By Man Who Was 'Irritated'

Why did he do it?

At least one person is confessing why he generated a random but widely circulated rumor that Jon Bon Jovi had been found not breathing in a New Jersey hotel and died from cardiac arrest.

[Note to fans: Bon Jovi is still very much alive, judging from his tanned and grinning apperance in St. Barts earlier this week.]

But the truth was different according to Jeffrey Goho, a musician in Pennsylvania, who started the death hoax in mid-December. He cops to having started the rumor on a fake Twitter account, saying he was irritated at the "Wanted Dead Or Alive" singer's seeming success for reasons other than his musicianship.

"I just kind of took the liberty and started (the rumor), because I was so irritated... All I heard was 'Bon Jovi this,' 'Bon Jovi's starting a restaurant'... It was like, 'Jeez, (Bon Jovi) was a household name due to the music, not the business," Goho told the Asbury Park Press.

Goho also says the he received instant hate mail and accusations of promoting his own band via his fake Twitter account.

The internet and "Slippery When Wet" fans could only be hysterical for a short while. Bon Jovi fought off the bizarre rumors by posting a picture on his Facebook account of himself holding a sign, dated December 19, 2011, with the message: "Heaven looks a lot like New Jersey."

As Bon Jovi might say, "It's my life -- and it's not over."

PFT: Brees passes Marino? |? Falcons irked

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees celebrates after his team defeated the Atlanta Falcons in New OrleansReuters

The Saints can still improve their playoff position by one spot, if they beat the Panthers and the 49ers somehow lose to the Rams in St. Louis.? (In the same way that the Saints, you know, somehow lost in St. Louis.)? Both games will be played at the same time, which could prompt Saints coach Sean Payton to do some scoreboard-watching, given that two of his key players ? cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and tight end Jimmy Graham ? suffered injuries in a meaningless regular-season finale in 2010.

The fact that quarterback Drew Brees sits only 190 yards ahead of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady raises the stakes.? Since the Pats need to beat the Bills to claim the No. 1 seed (the other contenders, the Ravens and Steelers, play at 4:15 p.m. ET), Brady will likely play most if not all of the game, and he could easily swipe the record if Brees plays less than 60 minutes.

On Tuesday, Payton addressed the situation, ultimately explaining that he?ll make a decision later in the week.? He dropped no specific hints as to the direction in which he?s leaning, but the bulk of his comments suggests that Brees and the rest of the regulars will play.

?I know I am twice shy when the ball comes near me on the sidelines,? Payton told the local media as to the possibility of getting gets injured in a meaningless game.? ?I have been bitten.? I think we just have to be smart.? We are playing well, with some momentum.? Each year is different.? We will look at that closely.?

Payton said he doesn?t know whether he?ll have someone keep an eye on the 49ers-Rams game.? ?Last year, we tried to go that route of paying attention to the game,? Payton said.? ?One of the challenges always is your roster to begin with.? You guys know that.? We sat players before.? It?s always hard because you don?t really have enough.? It?s not the preseason where you have 80, you only have 53.? We will try to do what is best for the team.?

But is it best for the team to have Brees hold off Brady?? Payton has a strong sense of history, but whether Brees holds the single-season passing yardage record for six days or 60 years has zero relevance to the team?s goals.

?I?m not really aware of the space between the two,? Payton said.? ?I am probably better off not knowing.? That being said, what we have to do is keep playing.? The playoffs are close.? How do we put ourselves in the best position to play well and put ourselves in an opportunity to win a championship?? That?s not always what is popular.? Two years ago in 2009, a lot of people in this room criticized us for resting players at Carolina.? It was what we needed to do as a team.? You make decisions.? They are not always right.? You try to make them with the right things to help your team.? Last night was one of those situations.? This upcoming game will be one of those situations.? It?s part of what we do.? It?s part of coaching.? It?s part of sport.?

Setting ? and holding ? records is part of what they do, too.? If Payton didn?t know the space between the two players, he likely will.? Even if he doesn?t know the number, he surely senses that it?s close enough to compel Brees to play a full game.

And so I?d be shocked if Brees and the rest of the starters don?t play a full game.? With Brees unlikely to wrest the MVP award from Aaron Rodgers, setting ? and keeping ? that record arguably becomes more important to Brees, to Payton, and to the rest of the franchise.

97% The Artist

All Critics (133) | Top Critics (37) | Fresh (129) | Rotten (4)

The Artist is the most surprising and delightful film of 2011.

A silent movie shot in sumptuous black-and-white, no less. A silent flick made with not a jot of distancing winking, but instead born of a heady affection for a bygone, very bygone, era of filmmaking.

It's a rocket to the moon fueled by unadulterated joy and pure imagination.

Strangely, wonderfully, The Artist feels as bold and innovative a moviegoing experience as James Cameron's bells-and-whistles Avatar did a couple of years ago.

"The Artist'' is a small, exquisitely-cut jewel in a style everyone assumes is 80 years out of date.

A beguiling tale about Hollywood's silent movie days that is itself silent, this made-in-L.A. French feature will charm cinephiles with its affection for one of the movies' golden ages.

full review at Movies for the Masses

...one of the most original films of this decade.

It's a valentine to the cinema that comes from the heart.

It's easy to dismiss The Artist as a simple love letter to the silent-film era, but there is a lot more at work here than just an attention-getting gimmick.

This film says a lot, without saying nearly any words. It's one of the best of 2011. (Content Review for Parents also available)

Not only does 'The Artist' clearly demonstrate that something was lost when movies started talking, but it also proves that we haven't begun to learn what can be done with images alone.

It may be silent, but The Artist earns some very loud applause

The Artist is a slight confection, really, but it's so delicious and knowing that it may well end up on any number of cineastes' desert-island lists. It's certainly on mine.

"The Artist" may be too cute to qualify as high art, but it's highly entertaining.

The story and the silent-era conventions may not be entirely original, but the director revives this uniquely American storytelling style with such infectious joy and life-affirming enthusiasm that it's nearly impossible not to respond in equal measure.

Essentially a stunt, but an expertly executed one that's immensely enjoyable, especially for movie buffs...a nimble, exuberant lark.

'The Artist' paints a glorious picture of old Hollyood.

In the more eye-pleasing The Artist, the plot eventually comes too close to its inspiration, though its early moments were headed for mastery - and transformation - of style.

Hazanavicius crafted more than a replica of the silent era... a masterwork that likely won't be imitated. How many movies in 2011 can you say that about? Only the best one.

"The Artist" is a delightful treasure. It is a charming mixture of comedy, melodrama and romance that cinema lovers should make a point of experiencing.

This is not some clinical dissection of bygone cinematic techniques; it's a lively, appealing effort that mostly rises above mere novelty.

It's about more than the gimmick, and The Artist will be calling to you, entrancing you and making you feel the love.

This is the feel-good movie of the year and that's meant as praise, not a putdown.

Fla. crash kills doc getting heart for transplant (AP)

MIAMI ? A surgeon and technician from a Mayo Clinic in Florida flying across the northern corner of the state to retrieve a heart for transplant died Monday in a helicopter crash that also killed the pilot, officials said.

The helicopter departed the clinic in Jacksonville around 5:45 a.m. but never arrived at the Gainesville hospital, Shands at University of Florida, about 60 miles to the southwest, said Kathy Barbour, a spokeswoman for Mayo, which is based in Rochester, Minn.

Killed were heart surgeon Dr. Luis Bonilla, procurement technician David Hines and the pilot, whose name wasn't released.

The heart they were going to pick up could not be used in another transplant because its viability expired, and the patient who had been scheduled to receive it is waiting for a new organ, Mayo Clinic spokesman Layne Smith said.

The helicopter went down about 12 miles northeast of Palatka, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen. The town is about 40 miles east of Gainesville and about 45 miles south of Jacksonville.

Clay County Sheriff's Office dispatcher Myron White confirmed the three dead but had no more information to release about the crash in the remote, densely forested area away from roads. The National Transportation Safety Board also was investigating.

The National Weather Service in Jacksonville reported that there was light fog with overcast conditions in the area but no rain.

"As we mourn this tragic event, we will remember the selfless and intense dedication they brought to making a difference in the lives of our patients," John Noseworthy, Mayo Clinic president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. "We recognize the commitment transplant teams make every day in helping patients at Mayo Clinic and beyond. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families."

The wreckage was spotted around noon by another helicopter, said sheriff's Lt. Russ Burke. Debris was scattered around the crash site, which was hidden from the road by rows of pine trees.

FAA records show the Bell 206 helicopter is operated by SK Jets. The St. Augustine company released a statement: "The focus of our efforts at this time is to attend to the needs of our passengers, crew and their families and work with the NTSB and local public safety officials to determine the cause and extent of the accident."

Gary Robb, a Kansas City aviation attorney specializing in helicopter safety, said SK Jets is known as a careful and safe operator in the industry. The small, lightweight craft has low weight and speed capabilities and is primarily used by traffic reporters or police departments, Robb said.

"It's not usually used in donor flights," he said.

"If you're on a mission where time is sensitive, why use an engine that is low performance?" Robb said, adding that the helicopter has a cramped cabin.

An NTSB investigator will scour the crash site for clues and look into the pilot's experience and any factors that might have impaired the pilot, any environmental factors such as birds or low visibility that may have contributed to the crash, and any mechanical problems with the helicopter, he said.

The Bell 206 usually has an older engine no longer installed in new models, Robb said.

"We've seen a number of instances where that engine simply failed," Robb said.

The crash and others like it illustrate the delicate nature of transporting organs.

In 1990, a surgeon and an assistant flying to pick up a donor heart for a patient were killed in a plane crash in New Mexico. And in 2007, a twin-engine plane carrying a team of surgeons and technicians ? along with a set of lungs on ice being brought to a patient already prepped for surgery ? crashed into the choppy waters of Lake Michigan. Six were killed.

Doctors ultimately got another set of donor lungs that were transplanted into the patient.

'War Horse': The Reviews Are In!

Steven Spielberg's holiday offering is a 'litmus test' for moviegoers' feelings about the director, one critic says.
By Eric Ditzian

Tom Hiddleston in "War Horse"
Photo: DreamWorks

The Christmas holiday offers a staggering array of fresh cinematic choices. The last two weeks have given us films about chipmunks and tigers, 19th-century detectives and 21st-century spies, motion-captured adventurers and motorcycle-riding hackers. Shoot, there are not one but two Steven Spielberg flicks to choose from when all of your presents have been opened and that post-holiday-meal coma has set in.

The most recent is "War Horse," which nabbed two Golden Globe nominations and is likely to garner a slew of Oscar nods, including Best Picture and Best Director (even if the reviews are mixed). The movie, which hit theaters on Sunday (December 25), isn't polarizing so much as it is, in critic Bill Goodykoontz's lovely phrasing, a "litmus test" for moviegoers' feelings about Spielberg's films in general. Some reviewers have lauded the beautiful cinematography and stellar cast, while others have taken issue with the film's overly sentimental tone.

Read on for a deep dive into "War Horse" reviews.

The Story
"The film deals with the relationship between Albert Narracott (Jeremy Irvine) and his horse, Joey. It's a sprawling story that uses the background of World War I as a framework, but it's really a very direct journey. Albert's father (Peter Mullan) buys a horse, Albert falls in love with it, WWI begins, the horse is sold to Captain Nicholls (Tom Hiddleston), and Albert decides to enlist so he can find his horse and keep him safe. The film follows Joey from owner to owner, using the horse's journey as a way of dipping into a number of stories along the way, and eventually reaching a rousing and nakedly tear-jerking finale. It is an episodic film, and how you feel about the movie as a whole will depend largely on whether or not you are moved by the various stops along the way." — Drew McWeeny, HitFix

The Performances
"The cast is exemplary down the line, with both names and newcomers delivering expansive, emotional and almost entirely sympathetic performances. Neither side in the conflict is ennobled or demonized; like Joey (and a striking black steed who's his companion for a while), the grunts are just pawns in the hands of unseen manipulators of countless fates. Irvine is the very picture of a sturdy, well-intentioned, ruddy-faced English country lad of a hundred years ago and Mullan and [Emily] Watson look to have come from the earth they tread. Tom Hiddleston cuts a striking figure as an English officer who understands Joey early on, setting an example for the many others who briefly come and go through the horse's life as the war grinds on." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

The Action
"Spielberg's battle scenes are a marvel of sight and sound — the latter literally shakes the theatres from the pop of rifles and the thunder of cannons. Spielberg tugs at the heart strings, but he's also not afraid to smack you upside the head with combat that realistically shows the madness of war. He interrupts the action too often, perhaps fearing a punitive censor rating. There are long stretches of 'War Horse' where Joey passes from hand to hand like the precious golden circle of 'The Lord of the Rings,' as this barnyard Balzac further demonstrates its wisdom and stoicism while dispensing silent life lessons." — Peter Howell, Toronto Star

The Dissenters
"[It's] overlong, painfully earnest and sometimes even hokey. Clearly, Spielberg intended 'War Horse' as a throwback, an homage to good, old-fashioned, heartrending storytelling, full of recognizable types and uplifting themes. The skies are so impossibly colorful in such a retro way, they look like hand-painted backdrops on a soundstage. And the dialogue is so frequently on-the-nose and repetitive, it might just make you cringe." — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

The Final Word
" 'War Horse' is a sort of litmus test for how you feel about Steven Spielberg's films. It's a beautiful movie, stunning to look at, with echoes of film history all throughout, reaching back to 'Gone With the Wind,' 'The Searchers,' Spielberg's own 'Saving Private Ryan' and more. It's also unapologetically sentimental. Spielberg all but begs you to cry, and unless you're a heartless cad, you probably will." — Bill Goodykoontz, The Arizona Republic

Benghazi Residents Demonstrate Against Libyan Government (Time.com)

In mid-February, protests in Libya in front of the Benghazi courthouse swelled into a revolution and civil war that brought down Muammar Gaddafi. Now, blocks away, Libyans are again demonstrating in Benghazi. But this time they are directing their ire at the country's new rulers, complaining that they are continuing in the deposed dictator's path. Citing the failure to purge Gaddafi loyalists from the government and the lack of accountability from their leaders, Benghazi residents believe that the National Transitional Council (NTC) -- formed to replace the ousted leader's regime -- has not addressed their concerns.

In Sharjah Square on Thursday night, Dec. 15, hundreds of people gathered to loudly deliver a number of demands. (The next day, the crowd was much larger, estimated at 3,000 to 4,000 people.) Men with bullhorns shouted their complaints, and the crowd roared with approval. Behind them, a 20-ft. (6 m) sign affixed to a building listed their grievances under the title "Demands to Correct the Revolution." "We did not fight the revolution so Gaddafi's cronies could keep their positions," complains Said Buhibla, 31. "They still control the ministries. They control the embassies abroad. The NTC must purify the government of Gaddafi supporters." (See life in Benghazi during wartime.)

It is a demand the NTC will find difficult to meet. Gaddafi had staffed senior ministerial positions with supporters of his 1969 revolution. Libya's international isolation prevented the emergence of a new generation of Western-trained Libyan professionals. Beginning in the late 1970s, Gaddafi tangled with the West and hunted dissidents in European countries, leading many to largely close their borders to Libyan students. Almost a decade of sanctions for Libya's involvement in the downing of a civilian airliner over Lockerbie, Scotland -- including a flight ban -- made it virtually impossible for Libyan students to study in Western universities. Those with the experience necessary to manage large bureaucracies and deal with technical issues were often associated with Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam, who for much of the past decade was viewed as the country's leading reformer. Among them were the NTC's former Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril and Shukri Ghanem, Gaddafi's last Oil Minister. Today there are few trained Libyan specialists who can meet the protesters' demands.

"Gaps have emerged between a Tripoli-based NTC and the people," explains a 60-year-old physician who gave his name as only Muhammad. "Benghazi is not well represented [in the NTC]." His complaint is echoed by many in eastern Libya. The February revolt was spearheaded by easterners, and the NTC was based in Benghazi before moving westward to the capital of Tripoli after Gaddafi's fall in September. Many had hoped the new leadership would rectify the deposed leader's long neglect of Benghazi, Libya's second city. Gaddafi had lavished industry and infrastructure projects on his birthplace of Sirt and the remote desert region of Sabha, where he completed his high school studies. As luxury hotels sprouted there, roads in residential Benghazi remained unpaved. Sewage is pumped into a downtown lagoon. The city's residents fear their early sacrifices for the revolution have been forgotten. (See "In Benghazi, a Nostalgia for Gaddafi as Libya's Rebels Fail to Keep the Peace.")

Many in Benghazi are also impatient with the NTC's pace of reforms. They complain not only that their hopes for an economic windfall have failed to materialize but also that the situation has actually deteriorated. "We expected the NTC to use the country's oil wealth to give us jobs now that the government is no longer sending our money to Africa like Gaddafi did," says Abd al-Basit al-Fituri, a clerk at the local courthouse. "But all we see is that the banks are still closed and that we can't even get our money out. The situation is worse now than it was before."

A major complaint is the lack of transparency. "We don't know where our money is going. We don't know how the NTC is choosing new members," grumbles Mohamed Bayu, 30. "The NTC must stand up and say what it stands for." Government officials admit that the protesters have a point. An NTC official explains how a key ministry left no paper trail detailing its transactions. "We don't have a single document tracing where the money went. How much things were bought and sold for. It is all in phone calls and conversations. That is not the democratic way. That is not even the Gaddafi way," says the official, who requested anonymity because he was speaking about a sensitive topic. He is equally critical when discussing new NTC appointments. "We don't know how the new members were chosen, what the criteria used to select them was. I see only judges and lawyers and people good at lying," he says, sighing as he flips through a recently leaked list of new NTC members. (See pictures of Libya's new regime.)

"People were willing to be patient with the NTC's blunders while Gaddafi was in power. But now things have changed," explains Benghazi political-science professor Salah al-Sanussi. "They have failed to answer the demands of the people, and violence against the politicians is possible."

Even NTC chairman Mustafa Abdel-Jalil is feeling the heat. Long admired by many Libyans for his probity and willingness to stand up to Gaddafi, under whom he served as Justice Minister, Abdel-Jalil is now facing criticism that would have been unthinkable just months ago. "He thinks we are foolish," says Muftah Kusabat, 43, cradling his 4-year-old son. "We will change him by force. He doesn't know what Benghazi means. But he will find out." Later, after an Abdel-Jalil supporter stopped his pickup truck in front of the square and denounced the attacks against the NTC leader, a crowd swarmed his vehicle and tried to remove him by force.

It was a scene virtually unseen in eastern Libya since the NTC was formed in February. But with few changes apparent in post-Gaddafi Libya, protests are likely to continue until the council institutes the reforms Libyans are demanding.

Holiday flying to fall slightly, trade group says

Fewer people will fly this holiday season, but flights will still be packed.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Best North American airports for skiers

As winter approaches, it may be helpful to know which airports savvy skiers and snowboarders seek out ? and where a boarding pass may be exchanged for a free lift ticket.

    3. Frustrated flier claims baggage runaround, sues Delta
    4. 4 TSA agents fired for failing to properly screen bags
    5. Great gear for kids on the go

That's according to a forecast released Tuesday by the main trade group representing U.S. airlines. Airlines for America predicts that about 43.3 million travelers will fly on U.S. carriers over the three-week holiday period, a 1 percent decline from a year earlier. That works out to about 20,000 fewer people per day. The trade group attributes the decline to "lingering economic concerns" and high energy prices that are limiting would-be travelers' disposable income.

About 1.6 million to 2.3 million people are forecast to fly each day between Wednesday and the first week of January.

Even with fewer passengers, fliers won't have more room to stretch out. Flights will be full because airlines have reduced the number of flights and planes, the trade group said.

Packed planes don't just mean less leg room, though. Fuller planes also mean more delays if something goes wrong. Last year, when major snowstorms shut airports and crippled airlines, millions of travelers waited days to find other travel options.

A4A didn't offer a specific forecast for what passengers are paying to fly. But its chief economist, John Heimlich, expects fares in December will be on par with the rest of 2011, or about 10 percent higher than a year ago.

Even with higher fares, A4A notes that airlines are holding on to less than a penny in profit for every dollar in revenue. That's because operating expenses, mostly due to higher fuel prices, are climbing just as fast as sales.

Travelers bracing for packed planes and long lines should keep these tips in mind to make travel run smoothly:

AT HOME

? Check in a full 24 hours ahead of your flight. This will help in getting the seat you want and possibly give you a leg up later on. Some airlines board fliers according to check-in times.

? Don't forget your bags. When you check in online, make sure you indicate if you have a checked bag. Checking in luggage online will save time at the airport.

? Arm yourself with information. Look up the airline's customer service number and its contract of carriage ? the list of rights you have on a flight ? on the airline's website before you leave home. It'll pay off if something goes wrong.

? Brings snacks and an empty water bottle. You can fill the water bottle after you go through security.

? Don't wrap gifts. The TSA will unwrap anything they deem suspicious. Don't risk it.

? Pack sensibly. The holidays might not be the best time to stuff a carry-on to avoid a checked bag fee. Overhead bins will be extremely full.

AT THE AIRPORT

? Arrive early. It's the easiest way to de-stress your trip.

? Plot your attack. There are smartphone applications that let you check everything from the emptiest parking lots to security wait times. You can also sign up for flight alerts though the airlines or online travel sites that will let you know if you know if your flight is delayed or canceled.

? Wear slip-on shoes. They're the easiest to get on and off at security. This year, though, kids under 12 won't have to remove their shoes.

? Think like a seasoned traveler. Have your liquids in a plastic bag outside of your suitcase before approaching security. Take off your belt, and remove everything from your pockets (new body scanners are more sensitive to those items than metal detectors.) Also, have your boarding pass and identification in your hand to speed things up.

WTO chief, UN human rights expert in food spat (AP)

GENEVA ? The head of the World Trade Organization and a U.N. food expert have exchanged testy messages in a public spat over how to help feed the world's poor.

Olivier De Schutter, the U.N.'s expert on the right to food, accused WTO chief Pascal Lamy on Friday of advocating a trade-centric approach "that has failed spectacularly."

De Shutter, a Harvard-educated lawyer based at the University of Louvain, Belgium, says food bills in the poorest countries jumped as much as sixfold from 1992 to 2008.

Many poor countries rely on large-scale imports even as domestic farmers struggle to compete on the open market.

Lamy says limiting food trade to safeguard domestic needs risks driving prices up even higher and "exacerbating the negative impacts on poor consumers."

Business schools turn to Islamic finance - University World News

As unemployment levels remain high in the West, finance students are being encouraged to gain expertise in Islamic banking so that they will be able to work in the Gulf states and in the wider Islamic world.

Universities are also exposing students to other non-conventional and ethical finance models that include eco-finance and micro-finance.

While universities in the United Kingdom and France have offered Islamic finance programmes for some years because of their large Muslim populations, Spain is also increasingly looking into these programmes.

The Instituto de Empressa (IE) business school in Madrid has been offering Islamic finance programmes for five years and partnered with Saudi Arabia's King Abdul Aziz University (KAU) to launch the Saudi-Spanish Center for Islamic Economics and Finance (SCIEF) earlier this month.

Speaking at the event, Dr Ahmad Mohamed Ali Al Madani, head of the Islamic Development Bank, said the financial crisis had raised people's concerns beyond profit margins into where their money is invested. Al Madani was acting rector of KAU from 1967 to 1972 and was Saudi Arabia's deputy minister of education in the 1970s.

Business schools needed to respond accordingly and Spain was in a good position to do this considering the country's Arabic heritage, he said.

"You look around and find that Islamic institutions are in the hundreds. Amounts of the assets are in the billions. The system proved that it can support economic systems and respond to big demand from people in different parts of the world."

Professor Ignacio de la Torre, IE's academic director of the masters in finance programmes, said at the SCIEF launch that there is already US$1 trillion of Islamic money, and that it is growing at 20% with US$200 million of additional Islamic money coming in every year.

"When you travel to the Gulf, where 50% of banking has been Islamised, there are not enough people with skills and understanding of Islamic finance," he said.

He added that, from a career perspective, students would be wise to have knowledge of this area because those who work in conventional finance will sooner or later be faced with Islamic finance.

Due to the increasing focus on Islamic finance globally, the subject is now mandatory for masters in finance students, said Dr Celia de Anca, director of the centre for diversity at IE business school.

"We've been teaching it as an elective for five years and now it is mandatory because we realise the world of finance is changing so much that students and future financial managers should know more about what's going on," she said.

Students were showing an interest in sustainability in finance, ethics in finance and ecological finance and the school is looking into developing specialisations in alternative finance, de Anca said.

A number of UK universities have a strong tradition in Middle East studies and more recently in Islamic finance. At Durham University, Islamic finance programmes have been offered for more than 25 years, Durham Centre for Islamic Economics and Finance director Dr Mehmet Asutay said at the Madrid launch.

The university has the largest PhD programme in Islamic finance as well as masters degrees in arts and in science in the field.

"In addition to Muslims coming from all over the world to the centre, we have English German, Italian and Spanish students," he said.

The field is not without its challenges. Professor Simon Archer of the Henley University of Reading's International Capital Market Association said the area was relatively new and "there is not a wealth of excellent textbooks".

Archer added: "Research literature is sparse and spread over a number of different journals and not tremendously accessible."

In addition, there were "opportunistic" universities in the UK that have responded to the need for programmes with varying levels of quality.

Former Mex Pres de la Madrid in grave condition (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? Mexican President Felipe Calderon says former President Miguel de la Madrid Hurtado is in grave condition.

Rumors had spread earlier Saturday that the former president had died, and Calderon had sent his condolences via Twitter. Mexican newspapers and even presidential candidate Enrique Pena Neto had commented on de la Madrid's supposed death.

Calderon's Twitter account later emphasized that the 77-year-old former president's family said he had not died. Calderon also wrote that de la Madrid had been hospitalized for respiratory problems.

De la Madrid was president from 1982 to 1988, as the country suffered hyperinflation and other economic crises. He also led the country during a devastating 1985 earthquake.

Scheduled home auctions hit 9-month high in Nov.

(AP) ? Fewer U.S. homes entered the foreclosure process or were taken back by banks in November, reflecting a seasonal pullback in foreclosure activity by lenders and mortgage servicers.

But for some homeowners already behind on their mortgage payments, the end-of-year slowdown isn't likely to provide much of a reprieve.

The number of homes in foreclosure and scheduled to be auctioned hit a nine-month high last month, foreclosure listing firm RealtyTrac Inc. said Thursday.

The surge came about because of a spike three months earlier in homes entering the foreclosure process for the first time. And unless those borrowers find a way to get current on their mortgage payments, many of those homes will likely be sold at auction or end up being taken back by the lender.

"Despite a seasonal slowdown similar to what we've seen each of the past four years, November's numbers suggest a new set of incoming foreclosure waves," said RealtyTrac CEO James Saccacio.

All told, foreclosure auctions were scheduled on 96,540 U.S. homes last month, RealtyTrac said. That's up 13 percent from October, but still down 17 percent from November last year.

Some states posted far higher monthly increases in scheduled home auctions last month. In California, they were up 63 percent, while in Washington they climbed 56 percent.

Those homes could end up back on the market as foreclosures or short sales, when a homeowner sells their property for less than what they owe on their mortgage. And that means more pressure on home values, because foreclosures and short sales typically sell for a lot less than other homes.

U.S. foreclosure activity slowed sharply starting in October of last year, after problems surfaced with the way many lenders were handling foreclosures. Specifically, signing off on home foreclosures without first verifying documents ? a practice referred to as "robo-signing."

Many of the nation's largest banks reacted by temporarily ceasing all foreclosures, re-filing previously filed foreclosure cases and revisiting pending cases to prevent errors.

The pace of foreclosure activity continued to slow much of this year as major lenders worked toward a possible settlement of government probes into the industry's mortgage-lending practices.

Those settlement talks, led by a group of state attorneys general, have suffered some setbacks in recent months after officials in California and Massachusetts broke with the rest of the states. There also has been disagreement among the states' prosecutors over what terms to offer the banks.

Still, there have been signals that foreclosure activity will be increasing in coming months.

Banks stepped up action in August against homeowners whose mortgage had gone unpaid. The number of homes receiving an initial notice of default that month jumped 33 percent from July. Default notices also rose between September and October.

That helped set the stage for the sharp increase in scheduled foreclosure auctions last month and will likely contribute to an anticipated bump in home repossessions early next year, Saccacio said.

Home repossessions hit their lowest level since March 2008 last month, according to RealtyTrac. In all, banks took back 56,124 homes last month, down 17 percent from October and from November a year ago.

Banks are now on track to repossess some 810,000 homes this year, down from more than 1 million last year, according to RealtyTrac. The firm had originally anticipated some 1.2 million homes would be repossessed by lenders this year.

High unemployment, a sluggish housing market and falling home values remain a major factor in homeowners falling behind on their mortgage payments. Many borrowers also have simply stopped paying their mortgage because they are underwater ? a term for owing more on a mortgage than the home is worth.

At the end of September, 10.7 million, or 22.1 percent of all U.S. homes with a mortgage, were underwater, according to CoreLogic. And an additional 2.4 million borrowers had less than 5 percent equity in their homes, the firm said.

In all, 224,394 U.S. properties received a foreclosure-related notice last month, down 3 percent from October and down 14 percent from November last year, RealtyTrac said. That amounts to one in every 579 households.

Initial default notices declined 8 percent from October and were down 9 percent from November last year.

At the state level, Nevada had the nation's highest foreclosure rate last month with one in every 175 households receiving a foreclosure notice ? more than three times the national average.

California, which alone accounted for 28 percent of all U.S. homes receiving a foreclosure notice last month, had the second-highest foreclosure rate. Arizona was third.

Rounding out the top 10 states with the highest foreclosure rate in November are Utah, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, Illinois, Ohio and South Carolina.

Tebow mixes faith and football with no apologies (AP)

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. ? The Gospel and the gridiron are inextricably intertwined in Tim Tebow's world.

The scrambling quarterback and devout Christian draws as much scrutiny for mixing faith with football as he does for his unconventional winning ways.

With all eyes on the quirky QB who has led the Denver Broncos' remarkable resurgence, Tebow isn't shy about publicly professing his religious beliefs, often ending interviews with a hardy "God Bless!"

He inspired a viral phenomenon known as "Tebowing" when he dropped to a knee in prayerful reflection as his teammates celebrated around him in Miami after the first in a string of six outrageous comebacks.

Raised by missionary parents, Tebow wore Bible verses on his eye black at Florida and still preaches to villagers in the Philippines and inspires inmates during jailhouse talks.

And he's sharing his religious beliefs with his teammates as enthusiastically as he yells the cadence at the line of scrimmage on Sundays.

Coach John Fox asked Tebow to give the weekly address to the team on the eve of a game against at San Diego last month, and nobody was surprised when Tebow shared Proverbs 27:17 ? "As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another," something Tebow deemed appropriate as offense, defense and special teams feed off one another in what NFL junkies call "complementary football."

Another time, Tebow approached defensive players before a home game against the New York Jets and told them not to fret, God's got this.

"I like his passion," Fox said. "I think in today's world with all that's going on in sport and our society, I think it's wonderful."

Others cringe.

Former Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer said he likes Tebow but would like him a lot more if he would quit reminding everybody how much he loves Jesus Christ.

No way, Tebow said, insisting he isn't "just a Christian or a believer at church."

Many an athlete has used his platform as a pulpit.

Chap Clark, a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, a prominent evangelical school based in California, said Tebow's unorthodox route to success, after so many predicted he would fail as a quarterback, has set him and his faith apart, even from the many other athletes who talk about their religious principles.

"Tim has this ferocity as a competitor, but it's still a game to him. He is consistently saying that football is not the center of life," Clark said. "His great strength is that even people who don't agree with his faith at all play their best around him."

Tebow recently told The Associated Press that he knows his openness about his religion can be divisive but he feels compelled to share his story of salvation regardless of the sensitivity of the subject, and he relayed one of his favorite quotes: "I don't know what my future holds, but I know who holds my future," in showing how leans on his faith so he can focus on football unencumbered by others' opinions.

"To get me through? Without a doubt, 100 percent," Tebow said. "And that's the thing about my faith: it's not just something that happens when you're at church or happens when you're praying or reading the Scripture. It's part of who you are, as a person, as a player, in your life and everything."

Teammate Brian Dawkins, who's equally enthusiastic about sharing his Christianity, said he can't fathom why anyone would have a problem with somebody invoking his right to free speech or freedom of religion.

"He doesn't pull up a pulpit in the middle of the locker room and say, `Hey, everybody, gather `round, let me tell you something.' That's not how this thing works," Dawkins said. "It's individual. If someone asks a question, we'll share our faith and our testimony.

"I don't understand why it's such a big deal. Tebow, he's not the first one, Reggie White, Irving Fryar, there are many guys who have lived their lives with outside faith. But for whatever reason, Tim gets so much grief now. To this day, I don't understand it.

"Football is what we do, not who we are."

Amen to that, Tebow said.

The scrambler, who sometimes sings hymns as he runs onto the football field to stay calm in crunch time, said he can't compartmentalize his faith because it's such an integral part of who he is.

"Unfortunately, a lot of people do, but what I feel is living your faith and being genuine is in everything you do and that's football, that's life," Tebow said.

So, he's not going to stop praying on the field or praising God in public even if some find it offensive.

Whether or not his teammates share in his tenets, there's no denying he's inspiring them.

"He had everybody listening" when he spoke about the Proverbs, linebacker Wesley Woodyard said. "Just to see him get up there and talk and believe in himself, that's something that spreads throughout the whole team. He believes in himself, so we believe in him."

Before a game against the Jets last month, Tebow approached Woodyard and cornerback Champ Bailey, among others, to share his faith.

"He said God just came and told him to just make sure that he spreads the word and tell everybody, don't worry about a thing and at the end of the day give credit to God," Woodyard recounted.

"Probably if anything I said, `Don't worry. There's a plan for whatever. Let's go and give our heart out and be the same no matter what. Let's give God the glory win or lose and go lay our hearts on the line,'" Tebow said. "That's usually what I most often say, something like that."

It's not like Tebow is proselytizing, inducing others to convert to his faith, his teammates say.

"The thing about Tim, I respect him, because he's never pushed his religion off on anybody," Woodyard said. "He just goes out there and believes in God himself and shows it every day."

Randall Cunningham, also a mobile quarterback who regularly expressed his religious views during his playing career, said many people criticize Christians for being hypocrites and maybe expect Tebow to fall from grace.

"But I'm going to tell you something, that kid is not a hypocrite," Cunningham said. "... I watch him. He cares about his team, he cares about the fans, he cares about the game, he cares about success and he knows that he can do all things through Christ and that's what he does and that's why he wins."

Indeed, Cunningham said he thinks the Broncos wouldn't have won seven of eight under another quarterback.

"God's hand is on him. Because he's trusting God, I believe that God honors his faith," Cunningham said.

"The Bible says that God chose the lowly things of this world, that's what everybody says about him, that he's not a good quarterback, he's not this and he's not that. And then what does God do? He proves everybody wrong. Through this young, 24-year-old kid, in front of the world, God uses him. That is a powerful, powerful man of God right there."

Olympus faces earnings deadline, ex-CEO in Tokyo (AP)

TOKYO ? Olympus Corp. faces a deadline to report revised earnings Wednesday to avoid being removed from the Tokyo stock market after a whistle-blower questioned fees and acquisitions that turned out to be part of a deception to hide $1.5 billion in investment losses.

Former President and Chief Executive Michael Woodford, who has been in the limelight for first raising questions about exorbitant fees and acquisitions, is back in Tokyo to meet investors and legislators, and to try to lead a turnaround at the camera and medical equipment maker.

Woodford, a 51-year-old Briton and a rare foreigner to lead a major Japanese company, was fired in October after going public with his doubts about massive consulting fees on the acquisition of British medical equipment maker Gyrus Group in 2008 and other spending.

He was in Japan last month to meet police and other investigative authorities. He has said he wants to fix Olympus and has expressed hopes shareholders will back him.

Olympus President Shuichi Takayama has said Woodford lacks the right teamwork style to lead the company, although now acknowledges the positive side of Woodford's whistleblowing. Olympus initially denied any wrongdoing and lambasted Woodford.

No one has been charged in the scandal. But Olympus management has said several top company men were involved in the scheme and has promised to investigate 70 officials, including former and current executives and auditors, to pursue possible criminal charges.

Meeting the Wednesday deadline for a revised earnings report is a must for Olympus to stay on the stock exchange, but it could still be delisted if seriously dubious accounting is found.

A third-party panel set up by Olympus, including a former Japanese Supreme Court judge, released the findings of an investigation earlier this month, which said top executives who were "rotten to the core" had orchestrated the accounting cover-up spanning three decades.

As of 2003, Olympus had racked up 117.7 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in investment losses dating back to the 1990s, according to the company.

The overpriced fees for financial advice and overvalued acquisitions were part of an elaborate deception utilizing overseas banks and several funds to keep the massive losses off the company's books, Olympus says.

Japanese magazine Facta was first to report the dubious money.

Tsuyoshi Kikukawa, who was behind Woodford's appointment as chief executive and later his firing, has since resigned as chairman. He is among several executives suspected of knowing about the scheme.

Last month, Olympus dismissed Executive Vice President Hisashi Mori, saying he was involved in the cover-up along with Kikukawa. A company auditor also resigned.

Olympus stock plunged after the scandal broke but has since recouped some of those losses on optimism it might not be booted off the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
