Jon Favreau Returns for Iron Man 3

With big names like Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, James Badge Dale and Rebecca Hall joining returning series veterans Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, and Don Cheadle, Iron Man 3?is shaping up to be a promising new entry in the popular film series. By comparison, it seems almost trivial that obscure actor Ashley Hamilton is apparently in talks to play equally obscure Iron Man villain, Firepower. Then again, it?s unclear how, exactly, this character fits into the larger story line ?based on the Iron Man ?Extremis? storyline, leaving open the possibility that Firepower will, in fact, play a pivotal role.

In other Iron Man 3?news: Former franchise helmer Jon Favreau confirmed on Twitter that ? while he won?t be directing the threequel ? he will?be returning to the franchise as Tony Stark?s bodyguard, Happy Hogan.

Ashley Hamilton is probably best known for playing recurring character Cole Deschanel on the soap opera series?Sunset Beach in 1997, before being replaced by actor Eddie Cibrian. Hamilton also earned attention for his brief marriage to actress Shannen Doherty, which ended in divorce after only five months. None of this exactly recommends him for the role of a?super villain in an A-list Hollywood production. In fact, the closest he?s come to that was playing a bad guy in the family comedy sequel Beethoven?s 2nd, back in 1993. A big reason for Hamilton?s possible involvement in Iron Man 3?likely has to do with the fact that, according to Variety, Robert Downey, Jr. is a close friend.

Firepower is an experimental battle suit much like Tony Stark?s Iron Man armor. It was originally designed and worn by Jack Taggert for the purpose of defeating the superhero, and has more recently been seen in the service of Iron Man nemesis The Mandarin.

If nothing else, the presence of Firepower indicates a certain level of deviation from?Warren Ellis? six-issue Iron Man: Extremis?comic book series, which reportedly provides much of the basis for Iron Man 3?s plot (Firepower wasn?t in Ellis? version). Of course, Shane Black and company never claimed to be making a direct adaptation of Extremis, which would be difficult to pull off without earning an R-rating, given the storyline?s often brutal, graphic violence. All that?s really known is that the film will incorporate certain elements from Ellis? series, and possibly subsequent stories featuring the titular nanotechnology.

Sources close to the production still maintain that Ben Kingsley will NOT be playing The Mandarin, no matter how much fans of the comics may want him to. Kingsley WOULD be a perfect fit (despite not being part-Chinese), and the Mandarin DOES unleash the Extremis technology in a more recent storyline, but the actor has apparently already signed on for a different role in the film.

Iron Man 3?is scheduled for release on May 3rd, 2013.

One would think that the presidential election in post-Revolution Egypt resembles what takes place in democratic countries: Contesting candidates, vigorous campaigns, heated public debate over candidates' portfolios and chances of success, even the Western-style televised presidential debates. Except that Egypt is not a democracy. Not even close to becoming one.

In democracies, voters know what the president's formal, constitutional powers are. And they know for certain. But in Egypt Egyptians will go to vote with no knowledge of what authorities will be vested in the president and whether the candidate who will win the poll will have enough powers to implement the portfolio on which he based his electoral campaign.

With no permanent constitution in place yet, a 60-article constitutional declaration, imposed by the ruling Supreme Council for the Armed Forces (SCAF), lays out a confusing and much-contested "roadmap of transition."

Although the interim declaration does state the powers of the president (albeit murkily), the document is supposed to become obsolete once a new constitution gets drafted and enforced within weeks or months, specifying the system that will guard Egypt's political arena, a system that might as well be presidential, parliamentary or mixed, which each system carrying different possibilities for the nature of the president's post.

The People's Assembly has not yet succeeded in forming a committee assigned to write a permanent constitution for the country, although this was supposed to be the parliament's primary task.

The existence of an interim declaration doesn't make things clearer. There is no consensus over the document, with its articles getting interpreted differently by Egypt's various political entities at different points of time, leaving the country in a vicious circle of constitutional void. A case in point was the debate on the declaration's entailment as to which should take place first: electing a president or writing the constitution that would designate the president's powers. For months, the country's legal experts were divided over the issue -- and conflicting statements were made by political forces, including SCAF members themselves, although SCAF is the very entity that enforced the transition's roadmap.

The roadmap's ambiguity was also clear amid the frenzy over the parliament's threats of passing a no-confidence vote against Ganzouri's cabinet. For weeks, members of parliament, cabinet secretaries and premier, and SCAF -- the three groups publicly contended the People's Assembly's powers and whether it was authorized to dismiss the cabinet. (The crisis ended with a limited reshuffle of four secondary ministers only.)

Not only has the parliament failed to sack the cabinet, but it hasn't made any substantial progress toward democracy in post-Arab Spring Egypt. Similarly, a president without specific and confident authorities is not expected to change Egypt into a democracy.

Even after a permanent constitution gets eventually drafted and the president's authorities get revealed, a civilian ruler is not expected to fully exercise his legitimate powers -- not as long as SCAF is still in session and the Armed Forces are not accountable to the people, not subdued to elected civilian officials and institutions. A Wall Street Journal report published on May 18 predicts what SCAF has already hinted to several times over the past year: that it will not relinquish its upper hand over foreign policy, which includes Egyptian relations with the United States, the provider of annual military assistance to Egypt. The Army is also expected to seek to protect its budget from public scrutiny and parliamentary accountability.

Because democracy essentially entails the subservience of the military to civilian authority, Egypt is not a democracy yet. The mere existence of an elected parliament and the carrying out of presidential elections are no indication that the country is on a solid track of democratization. Not when there is no nationally-respected constitution in place and there is constant dispute and sophistry over the powers of the parliament and president, with the ultimate answers always possessed by 19 military generals who were never voted into office and who continue to keep the country under state of Emergency Law.

Unless elections are deemed to constitute an end in and of themselves, rather than a means toward peaceful transition of power within a democratic framework, there is no point in having high expectations of Egypt's upcoming presidential election.

African Americans Should Ignore The Recent Prostate Cancer Test ...

- I was in Atlanta, Georgia the past few days attending the American Urological Association?s (AUA) Annual Conference. While there we heard from the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) that it had ignored the voices of prostate cancer specialist, patients and patient advocacy organizations and that it was dancing to its own music by issuing a final ?D? recommendation for the PSA test. This recommendation is against the routine use of the PSA test for the early detection of prostate cancer; this news made headlines across the country.

Since the draft recommendation issued by the USPSTF in October 2011, I have communicated PHEN?s opposition against the draft ?D? recommendation. We stand firmly against this final recommendation and with many other organizations, prostate cancer specialists and some government agencies (see video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jIFcd8obfU&feature=g-upl) who accept data showing that the PSA test saves lives and is the major contributor to a decline of 49% in the prostate cancer death rate since the test has been used widely.

In a ?Town Hall Meeting? held at the AUA conference that included a representative of the USPSTF it was clear that any argument made in opposition to the USPSTF recommendation was simply ignored by it. The moderator asked for a show of hands of those that disagreed with the USPSTF?s position and nearly all hands were raised.

At the heart of the ?scientific evidence? used by the USPSTF to render its recommendation is the PLCO study. However the leader of this study, Dr. Gerald Andriole who participated on the panel for the Town Hall meeting has consistently stated his opposition to the conclusion that the USPSTF drew from this study and he supports the PSA test (see video at www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSouDkvH8cU&feature=relmfu). In addition, research experts emphatically point out that the PLCO data is too flawed to be used as the basis for a recommendation on the PSA test.

As I have pointed out since the PLCO study was released, African American men are not included in this study at a significant enough level that would allow the USPSTF to draw a conclusion on the effectiveness of the PSA test for Black men. However, the USPSTF has simply ignored this lack of data and included African American men and other high risk men in its final ?D? recommendation. This action was taken in spite of calls from congressional leaders, medical specialists and patient advocates that such action would be reckless and without a scientific basis.

With its ?D? recommendation, the USPSTF has issued a death sentence to those men that will need early detection of aggressive prostate cancer but will ignore their prostate health based on this recommendation.

PHEN will continue to focus on educating African American men about their prostate health and the importance of early detection of cancer. With a death rate 140% higher than for other men, Black men cannot simply ignore the killer within that is prostate cancer. PHEN will not be alone in its efforts as all of the organizations that focus on prostate cancer prevention, education and research that I have spoken with, strongly disagree with the USPSTF?s ?D? recommendation (see additional information below).

African American men should ignore the USPSTF recommendation against the use of the PSA test. PHEN?s guidance is based on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network ?Prostate Cancer Early Detection Guidelines? which calls for a baseline PSA test for African American and other high risk men at age 40 following a discussion with their doctor about screening for the early detection of prostate cancer.

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) is an alliance of 21 of the world?s leading cancer centers. The NCCN guidelines are widely recognized by oncology clinicians and payors. The prostate cancer early detection guidelines stress the importance of involving the patient and informing him of the implications and potential consequences that may arise from the decision to embark on an early detection pathway.
