BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese consumers are responding to a powerful new marketing tactic that plays to a widespread fear of food contamination - the promise of safe groceries sold online.
Pledging produce direct from the farm, vendors have found food is becoming one of the fastest-growing segments of Internet retailing as they cash in on scares from cadmium-tainted rice to recycled cooking oil.
The trend is adding momentum to a Chinese online retail boom driven by a rapidly expanding middle class, with companies such as COFCO Ltd and Shunfeng Express betting that a decent slice of a 1.3 billion population will pay for the peace of mind they say their services offer.
"I think people are willing to pay a higher premium than in the West. In other markets, like the UK, food e-commerce is about convenience. Here, there's going to be a higher quality and safety premium," said Chen Yougang, a partner at consultancy McKinsey.
But convincing some skeptical Chinese consumers on food quality will remain a battle. Shanghai-based Zhang Lei expressed doubt on the credentials of some products being touted as organic.
"Everyone knows that in China organic is not the real thing," said the mother of one.
Nonetheless, total online sales of fresh produce in China could rocket to 40 billion yuan ($6.5 billion) in five years from about 11.5 billion yuan this year, said Zhou Wen Quan, a senior analyst at Beijing Orient Agribusiness Consulting.
Research firm Euromonitor has more modest expectations, but still sees growth comfortably beating major overseas markets. It looks at volumes rather than values of online purchases of fresh food, with the Chinese market expected to grow by around 8 percent by 2017 from 664 million tonnes this year, compared to U.S. growth of about 5 percent from 77 million tonnes.
So far, most food sold on China's largest online shopping sites such as Yihaodian, majority owned by Wal-Mart, and Jingdong Mall has been packaged items or fruit with a relatively long shelf-life.
But a wave of new businesses are focusing on fresh and premium produce, using the Internet to target higher-income consumers than supermarkets, which typically serve a broader customer base, analysts say.
"The vegetables are really fresh," said Beijing resident Lei Na, who shops on websites such as Womai.com, owned by China's top food processor and trader COFCO.
"Supermarket food doesn't look that fresh, especially if you only get there in the evening."
Shunfeng Express, China's largest delivery company, last year launched Shunfeng First Choice offering a range of food to around 500,000 consumers. About 70 percent are imported products such as wine and milk powder, but it also sells local seafood, meat and vegetables.
"We go directly to the farms to pick the produce, and then using our own logistics, deliver straight to the consumer. So from the tree to the consumer's dining table, we'll remove all the sectors in between," said Yang Jun, director of sales and marketing.
DELIVERING ON PROMISES?
Persuading customers they can meet promises on food safety is crucial for online retailers.
"If I'm busy I use websites. But if I have time, I prefer to drive to the supermarket and choose vegetables myself," said Zhang in Shanghai.
But vendors say that cutting out middlemen increases freshness and makes food more traceable, while packaging barcodes that can be read by smartphones help consumers verify the origin of items.
And companies go to some lengths to describe their products online. Customers looking at free-range chickens on the Benlai Shenghuo website, a 2012 start-up whose name roughly translates as 'original life', get details on the breed they are selecting and its diet, along with photos of the birds wandering on farms.
Online customer reviews and ratings are also key in convincing potential buyers of quality, said Chen Liang, a senior research expert at Alibaba, owner of China's biggest online marketplace Taobao.
With its 10 million users per minute, Taobao has ridden the e-commerce boom in China, with its customers moving from non-essential items such as books and electronics to clothes and recently food. Its sales of meat, seafood, fruit and vegetables grew 42 percent last year to nearly 1.3 billion yuan.
"Before, people thought the Internet wasn't suitable for selling clothes. But now it's the most suitable channel. I think food will follow this trend," Chen said.
Another major challenge facing e-commerce food firms is the cost of developing nationwide cold chain logistics, with McKinsey's Chen suggesting players work together to connect suppliers with a network of cold storage facilities.
But with food scandals hitting Chinese shoppers thick and fast - products from the world's largest dairy exporter Fonterra have just been recalled from Chinese shelves - firms are confident they can overcome hurdles in the market.
"During the bird flu outbreak, our chicken sales exploded," said Steve Liang, founder of Shanghai-based online retailer Fields, referring to a jump in sales after a new strain of the virus discovered in February that killed over 40 people in China and Taiwan. ($1 = 6.1192 Chinese yuan)

Dromedary camels could be responsible for passing to humans the deadly Mers coronavirus that emerged last year, research suggests.
Tests have shown the Mers (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) virus, or one that is very closely related, has been circulating in the animals, offering a potential route for the spread.
The study is published in the journal Lancet Infectious Diseases.
But the scientists say more research is needed to confirm the findings.
The Mers coronavirus first emerged in the Middle East last year. So far, there have been 94 confirmed cases and 46 deaths.
While there has been evidence of the virus spreading between humans, most case are thought to have been caused by contact with an animal. But until now, scientists have struggled to work out which one.
'Smoking gun'To investigate, an international team looked at blood samples taken from livestock animals, including camels, sheep, goats and cows, from a number of different countries.
They tested them for antibodies - the proteins produced to fight infections - which can remain in the blood long after a virus has gone.
Continue reading the main storyEnd Quote Professor Paul Kellam Wellcome Trust Sanger InstituteThe definitive proof would be to isolate the virus from an infected animal ?
Professor Marion Koopmans, from the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment and Erasmus University in The Netherlands, said: "We did find antibodies that we think are specific for the Mers coronavirus or a virus that looks very similar to the Mers coronavirus in dromedary camels."
The team found low levels of antibodies in 15 out of 105 camels from the Canary Islands and high levels in each of the 50 camels tested in Oman, suggesting the virus was circulating more recently.
"Antibodies point to exposure at some time in the life of those animals," Prof Koopmans explained.
No human cases of the Mers virus have been reported in Oman or the Canary Islands, and the researchers say they now need to test more widely to see if the infection is present elsewhere.
This would include taking samples from camels in Saudi Arabia, the country where the virus is the most prevalent.
'Priority search'Prof Koopmans said: "It is a smoking gun, but it is not definitive proof."
Commenting on the research, Professor Paul Kellam from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Cambridge and University College London, said the research was helping to narrow down the hunt for the source of the virus.
But he told BBC News: "The definitive proof would be to isolate the virus from an infected animal or to be able to sequence and characterise the genome from an infected animal."
Health officials say confirming where the virus comes from and understanding how humans get infected is a priority.
Gregory Hartl, from the World Health Organization, said: "Only if we know what actions and interactions by humans lead to infection, can we work to prevent these infections."
Data suggests that it is not yet infectious enough to pose a global threat and is still at a stage were its spread could be halted.

Mike Richardson was one of the best safeties in school history.
The Backstory: As we continue in our Sun Devil Legend Series, we get to one of the best defensive backs in school history. He is one of only three, two-time consensus All-Americans in Arizona State history, dominating the Pac-10 in the early 80's.
This player was named All-Pac-10 four times as a Sun Devil and went on to have a very successful NFL career. He roamed the Arizona State secondary from 1979-1982 and his name is Mike Richardson.
The Player: Mike Richardson (1979-1982)
Richardson stepped onto campus in 1979 and had an immediate impact in his freshman season. He was named honorable mention All-Pac-10 that season as ASU went just 6-6 in Frank Kush's final season as head coach.
In 1980, Richardson made the second team All-Pac-10 selection under head coach Daryl Rodgers as he guided Arizona State to a 7-4 record including a 44-7 pounding of Arizona. Richardson tallied a team-high eight interceptions that season, earning him honorable mention All-American status from the Associated Press.
As a junior, Richardson had a breakout season. He once again led Arizona State in interceptions with six and he was named a consensus All-American, just the sixth player in school history to accomplish that feat at the time.
Richardson earned first team All-Pac-10 honors that season, as Arizona State finished with a 9-2 record and another victory over Arizona.
As a team captain in 1982, Richardson finished the season with 127 total tackles. He was once again named a consensus All-American, becoming just the second player in school history to accomplish the feat twice (Woody Green is the other). He was also a two-time Playboy Magazine All-American, the first Sun Devil to accomplish that.
Richardson helped Arizona State football get back into national prominence, as in 1982 they defeated Oklahoma to win the 1983 Fiesta Bowl. In his final two years, Arizona State went 19-4.
In the Pros
Richardson was taken in the second round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. He spent six season as a member of the vaunted Bears defense under Buddy Ryan.
He was a member of Chicago's 1985 Super Bowl team and was named an All-Pro in 1986. He spend 1989 with the San Francisco 49ers before retiring.
Honorable Mention
Steve Holden - The three-time All-WAC selection, Holden led the nation in punt returns in 1970. In 1972, he averaged 22.9 yards per reception for the Sun Devils and he set a school record with 12 touchdown receptions that season. Holden averaged over 19 yards per punt return in his ASU career and totaled 1,120 punt return yards while at Arizona State.

Besides the Samsung Galaxy S III, there also has been talk that the Samsung GALAXY Note II would also jump over Android 4.2.2 to Android 4.3. Both models are currently powered by Android 4.1.2. Considering that Android 4.3 is available, it makes sense for Samsung to start pushing it out now to its top-shelf models.
The post from Deutsche Telekom didn't mention a date when we could expect the update to begin rolling out. Just recently Android 4.3 was made available for the Google Nexus 4, Google Nexus 7 and Google Nexus 10. Last week, the new Android build was also sent out OTA to owners of the Google Play Edition of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One.

On one hand, Wednesday's decision was not surprising. American politics and society have long struggled with the demand to continue to keep locked up criminals who have committed the most vile crimes but who, according to law, are allowed to go free.?Yet that tendency threatens the integrity of the judicial process, with few willing to stand up for people who have done such reprehensible things, some legal experts say.
Such cases are emotionally fraught and constitute a delicate legal balance between public safety and due process, and the jury's verdict in the New York sex offenders' civil suit points to the difficulty of striking that balance.?
?It?s an ominous development,? says Robert Burt, a law professor at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. These kinds of legal efforts seek ?to turn?confinement [of sexual offenders] away from the ordinary criminal justice system, into a mental health issue, and then to offer treatment."?But the offer is a "fraud" that's not followed up on, he says.
The case centered on a 2005 Pataki administration initiative that called for the psychiatric evaluation and continued confinement of potentially dangerous prisoners slated to be released. Twenty states, including California, Florida, and Illinois, have enacted laws permitting the civil commitment of sexual offenders as of 2010. The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006 also authorizes the federal government to commit and treat federal sex offenders. But these include legal safeguards that have passed constitutional muster, including judicial review. The Pataki initiative was simply an administrative policy.
In 2006, a federal judge found the Pataki administration's Sexually Violent Predator Initiative to be unconstitutional, and those confined under civil commitments were released. The offenders in the civil suit, each convicted of horrendous sex crimes, sought $10 million in damages.
The jury found Mr. Pataki; Glenn Goord, former correctional services commissioner; and Eileen Consilvio, the former executive director of the Manhattan Psychiatric Center, the hospital where the plaintiffs were held, not liable. The jury did find the former commissioner of the State Office of Mental Health, Sharon Carpinello, liable for their involuntary confinement. It awarded the former prisoners $1 each in damages.
In his instructions to the jury, federal district Judge Jed Rakoff explained that it was ?undisputed? that the procedures of the Sexually Violent Predator Initiative violated constitutional due process. So the issue was, he said, whether this "violation of a plaintiff's rights was done intentionally, recklessly, wantonly, maliciously or the like, or was done, by contrast, in good faith."
For all but Ms. Carpinello, the jury found that they acted in good faith.

Immediately after the sudden and tragic death of "Glee" star Cory Monteith in mid-July, there was a period of respectful silence as friends and family tried to absorb what had happened.?
"Glee" is now heading back into production, and on Thursday more former co-stars began to speak up, as the show posted a memorial card on YouTube and Monteith's mother tweeted for the first time since her son's death:
McGregor also sent out several tweets?denying that an individual who had been "releasing articles related to my feelings and thoughts on how to take care of Cory's ashes has never been in contact with me."?
It's unclear exactly who McGregor was referring to, but Life & Style quoted a supposed cousin of the actor last week that McGregor planned to "spread some of the ashes in the different places he loved."
Additionally on Thursday, co-star Darren Criss appeared on "Conan" and spoke about working with Monteith. He said "it's been a very rough time," but added, "he will be severely missed. But I'm just so happy a guy like him got to touch as many lives as he did while we were lucky enough to have him."
Monteith died on July 13 in a Vancouver hotel of a mixture of a mix of heroin and alcohol and was reportedly cremated.?
Monteith's girlfriend Lea Michele, who had tweeted a photo of herself with Monteith on July 29, returned to work on "Glee" on Thursday and tweeted:
And the "Glee" cast also posted a short tribute "Memorial Card" on YouTube Thursday, which has already racked up nearly 850,000 hits.?
"Glee" returns on Sept. 26, then will go on a three-week hiatus.?

Is Chip Kelly?s up-tempo offense too fast for the NFL? Novak Djokovic reveals more of his wacky training routine, Hunter Mahan?s perfect decision, the biggest mystery of the Black Sox scandal and why it?s been a very non-Yankee like season. Here?s a look at some of the top stories from the past week.
NFL to the Eagles: Not So Fast
Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly has been plotting a football revolution since he was hired this winter to turn around the team?s fortunes. His plan is to continue the philosophy he perfected as the coach at Oregon: to run every play as quickly as possible with no huddles and no stoppages in play, all aimed at leaving the defense doubled over in exhaustion. This ?up-tempo? strategy, already popular at the college level, looks like it could change the pro game forever. There is just one small problem standing in Kelly?s way: referees. ?Kevin Clark

Hunter Mahan?s Perfect Decision
There was an unforgettable moment at this year?s Canadian Open, and it involved a player who didn?t even finish. By now you have probably heard about the roller coaster weekend of Hunter Mahan, the 31-year-old U.S. golfer who suddenly left the tournament in Oakville, Ontario, upon discovering that his wife had gone into labor, three weeks early. This would be exciting news on its own, but there was a delicious wrinkle: Mahan was leading the Open. -Jason Gay
Hunting Shoeless Joe?s Holy Grail
It is one of the most enduring mysteries in sports: What happened to the long-lost signed confession of ?Shoeless? Joe Jackson? The question has persisted since Jackson and seven other Chicago White Sox players were indicted on charges of fixing the 1919 World Series. The ?Black Sox? were acquitted of those criminal charges, but became baseball?s most famous outlaws when they were banished from the sport by Major League Baseball?s first commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis. -Ben Cohen

MUMBAI | Fri Aug 2, 2013 1:21pm BST
MUMBAI (Reuters) - India has revoked a patent granted to GlaxoSmithKline Plc for breast cancer drug Tykerb, a decision that follows a landmark India court ruling disallowing patents for incremental innovations that was a blow to global pharmaceutical firms.
However, India's Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB) upheld a patent granted on the original compound, or active pharmaceutical ingredient, lapatinib, citing innovative merit.
As a result, a GSK spokesman said its medicine would remain subject to patent protection until 2019. The additional patent on the particular salt of lapatinib used in Tykerb, which has now been rejected, would have extended that protection to 2021.
India's Supreme Court in April rejected a patent for Novartis AG's cancer drug Glivec, saying it was an amended version of a known molecule called imatinib, setting the precedent for more such cases in the country.
GSK had cut prices of Tykerb by about a third in India as part of a flexible pricing program designed to make important drugs more affordable in certain emerging markets.
Western drugmakers who covet a bigger share of India's fast-growing $13 billion drugs market have been frustrated by a series of decisions on intellectual property and pricing.
Last year, India revoked patents granted to Pfizer Inc's cancer drug Sutent, Roche Holding AG's hepatitis C drug Pegasys, and Merck & Co's asthma treatment aerosol suspension formulation. All were revoked on grounds that included lack of innovation.
Fresenius Kabi Oncology, the Indian unit of German healthcare group Fresenius SE, had challenged patents granted for both the original molecule and its marketed salt version, saying both molecules lacked innovation.
"This decision is just like the landmark Glivec ruling. The IPAB has said that the salt version of lapatinib cannot hold a patent," said lawyer Dominic Alvares of S. Majumdar & Co, which represented Fresenius Kabi in the case.
The IPAB rulings for both the patent disputes were uploaded on its website late on Thursday.
Shares in GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, the UK company's Indian unit, fell 2.8 percent on Friday.
The company can make an appeal on the decision to India's Supreme Court.
"We are studying the IPAB's decision but maintain our belief in the inventiveness of the lapatinib ditosylate salt and will consider the possibility of taking further steps before the appropriate authorities to validate this," the Indian GSK unit said in an email to Reuters on Friday.
"We are pleased that the IPAB in India has upheld our basic patent for the lapatinib compound, the active ingredient in Tykerb." GSK said. The patent expires in January 2019.
A strip of 10 Tykerb tablets costs about 4,160 rupees ($69) in India and a patient is expected to take five tablets a day for 21 days if the cancer is in an advanced stage.
Western pharmaceutical companies, looking to emerging markets such as India to help drive growth, have run into various obstacles recently, ranging from corruption and pricing probes in China to stock management problems in Brazil.

Yes, Yingquan, a spot on the map in southern China of which almost nobody has ever heard and which has nothing to recommend it to visitors ? except its municipal headquarters.
But what a headquarters! A grand flight of steps rises to a wide portico topped by a classical pediment (tick off the Pantheon in Rome.) On either side, above a towering colonnade, grey tiled mansard roofs stretch the length of the building (saves you going to the Palace of Versailles outside Paris.) And rising above it all, a dome that could have been lifted from the US Capitol.
Built in 2006 to the greater glory of the local Communist Party, this ostentatious piece of wedding cakery was the sort of thing the Chinese government had in mind this week when it banned the construction of any government building for the next five years.
The directive, the latest shot in President Xi Jinping?s frugality campaign, said that such buildings ? and there are many grandiose palaces in the most unimportant places ? have ?damaged the party and government spirit and affected the image of the party and government,? according to the official Xinhua news agency.
Chinese citizens have made no secret of their outrage at the waste of public money these mansions represent. Yingquan, for example, is a district of the city of Fuyang in Anhui Province, one of the poorest in China, where the average farmer?s income is less than $100 a month.
But that hasn?t stopped self-aggrandizing local officials from building themselves the most opulent of quarters. The city of Jinan, for example, capital of the eastern province of Shandong, boasts the largest government building in Asia, not much smaller than the Pentagon.
It cost $660 million, according to Xinhua.
The central government officials who issued the directive ? an unusual joint notice from the Communist Party Central Committee General Office and the State Council, the government top body ? are clearly wise to the tricks of their subordinates in the boondocks.
Not only are all new buildings banned, the instruction said, but neither can officials buy property, nor can they claim renovation or redevelopment as reasons to expand their offices.

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, France (Reuters) - Dissident Kazakh oligarch Mukhtar Ablyazov, accused at home of embezzling more than $5 billion, was told by a French judge on Thursday that he faced extradition, but his family vowed to fight an expulsion it said was politically motivated.
The 50-year-old businessman, an outspoken critic of Kazakhstan's long-time leader Nursultan Nazarbayev, has been in custody in France since his arrest on Wednesday near the French Riviera resort of Cannes.
"The judge will notify him that he is the object of an extradition request," said a spokesperson for the appeals court in Aix-en-Provence, where he was taken after armed police wearing balaclavas stormed the villa in which he was staying.
Ablyazov, who told Reuters in December he would run for president if fair Kazakh elections were called, was arrested under a warrant issued by Kiev, and so was most likely to be sent to Ukraine, the local prosecutor's office said.
He cannot be extradited to Kazakhstan, because it is not part of a Council of Europe extradition convention.
A lawyer close to the family said he suspected Ablyazov would be sent from Ukraine to Kazakhstan, which are former Soviet republics that have maintained close ties.
Two of Ablyazov's children, Madina and Madiyar, urged France not to extradite their father.
"We beg the French authorities not to grant Kazakhstan our father," they said in the statement. "Kazakhstan's pursuit of him is purely political. We are afraid for his life."
PROCEEDINGS COULD TAKE MONTHS
The hearing wrapped up by around 1 p.m. (1100 GMT/ 7:00 a.m. EDT), and Ablyazov was placed in provisional custody, his lawyer Bruno Rebstock told Reuters.
French legal sources said the extradition proceedings could take several months as judges would require proof from Ukraine that it had grounds for filing charges against him.
In Kiev, a police spokesman said: "The criminal case (against Ablyazov) was launched over ... fraud."
The prosecutor general's office in Kazakhstan - ruled for more than two decades by Nazarbayev, who critics call an autocrat who brooks no dissent - said it had been informed of Ablyazov's arrest by Interpol, which had him on a "Red Notice".
It said he was accused in Kazakhstan of "creating a criminal group which defrauded BTA Bank of more than $5 billion and of laundering illegally gained proceeds", and noted he was also wanted by law enforcers in Russia and Ukraine.
Ablyazov used to run BTA. He is wanted in Russia on fraud and forgery charges connected to a subsidiary of the bank, which also has a unit in Ukraine.
Kazakhstan, together with Russia and Ukraine, brought the charges after BTA went bankrupt in 2009 and was nationalized.
Ablyazov fled the oil-rich Central Asian state after BTA was declared insolvent. He won political asylum in Britain in 2011 but left the country in 2012 after being sentenced to jail for contempt of court and has been in hiding ever since.
Ablyazov has said his life has been in danger since he left Kazakhstan and that he feared for his safety in a British jail.
His wife, Alma Shalabayeva, and their six-year-old daughter Alua were hurriedly deported from Rome to Kazakhstan in May in a case that caused a furor in Italian politics.
The move was seen by some as a favor to Nazarbayev, in whose country Italy's energy giant Eni has invested billions of dollars.
Both are living with relatives in Kazakhstan's commercial capital Almaty, and Shalabayeva has given police a written undertaking not to leave the city as law enforcers probe her possible involvement in a crime.
Interpol said on its website that Ablyazov, who spent time in Russia between 2003 and 2005, was wanted by Moscow on charges of "large scale fraud", money laundering and document forgery.
In a rare display of dissent, a dozen Ablyazov supporters went to the French consulate in Almaty with a letter asking Paris not to send Ablyazov to Kazakhstan.
